Research Intern (SDA, Summer)

Research Intern at Fujitsu's Converging Technology Laboratory (Santa Clara, CA) 

The Converging Technology Laboratory (CT Lab) at Fujitsu specializes in combining research in multiple technical fields to address world challenges. Addressing these challenges requires a new approach that integrates multidisciplinary knowledge, including engineering, computer science, and artificial intelligence. Our goal is to provide evidence-based scientific tools to support large-scale system design and integration and accelerate innovation across industries.

We are seeking exceptional research interns to join our CT Lab in Silicon Valley to work on next-generation system design automation. This project aims to create a Large Language Model (LLM)-powered agent that transforms natural language requirements into digital twins that are further optimized. The project combines natural language processing, generative AI, modeling, and optimization to dramatically accelerate model-based system engineering workflows. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to shape a state-of-the-art platform at the intersection of AI, system integration and design.

The internship duration is a minimum of 3 months and a maximum of 5 months. 

Job responsibilities 

• Contribute to the development of an LLM-based pipeline that converts natural language requirements into digital twins for system-level integration and optimization.
• Assist in building and querying a structured knowledge base using domain-specific libraries and engineering data.
• Implement feedback loops to improve LLM-generated model quality and validate models.
• Develop and test model-based optimization algorithms (e.g., genetic search, gradient-based methods) that improve performance metrics.
• Collaborate with research staff to evaluate and refine model generation pipelines and contribute to pilot demonstrations on real-world design use cases.
• Publish research findings in scientific venues and present results in talks, conferences, and workshops.

Requirements 

• Currently enrolled in a Master’s or PhD program in a relevant area such as computer science, AI, or related engineering fields.
• Demonstrated experience with generative models, machine learning, or simulation tools (e.g., Modelica, Matlab).
• Strong programming skills in Python, and familiarity with ML libraries (e.g., PyTorch) and LLM frameworks (e.g., LangSmith, LangGraph).
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to collaborate across interdisciplinary teams.
• Track record of research creativity and technical accomplishments (e.g., publications, open-source contributions, technical projects).
