We encourage you to review our website to learn why we’re always looking for smart, purpose-led candidates to play a role in our bold, extra[not]ordinary® future.
The Role
Join our Translational Data Science team at Genmab’s Utrecht office for your internship. We partner closely with Bioanalytical Sciences to improve the quality and efficiency of how externally generated data from CROs (Contract Research Organization) is integrated into internal research workflows. This internship focuses on developing a single, integrated Shiny application, TRACE (Toolset for Reviewing and Aligning CRO Evidence), that applies both programmatic and AI-based logic to validate and review CRO deliverables, including structured sample manifests and unstructured reports. You will help design, implement, and test the components of this application, directly contributing to the robustness and standardization of data intake in Bioanalytical Science.
Project background
CROs working with Genmab provide two main types of data: structured sample manifests (e.g., spreadsheets of biological samples), and unstructured experimental reports (typically Word documents). These inputs vary widely in format and content across CROs, species, and study designs, yet all must be reviewed, validated, and harmonized before integration into internal systems such as the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
TRACE will serve as a central tool to support this process. It will allow users to upload CRO files, run automated validation checks, and receive LLM-supported suggestions for harmonization and review. The application will guide users through quality control steps for both types of input, ultimately enabling streamlined, LIMS-ready outputs and more efficient review workflows.
Responsibilities/objectives
Design and implement components of the TRACE Shiny application
Develop structured validation logic for sample manifests (e.g., completeness checks, format alignment)
Apply LLMs to support semantic harmonization of manifests and identification of inconsistent or non-standard input
Extend TRACE to support ingestion of CRO reports, using LLMs to flag missing or inconsistent content and highlight key information for review
Build a cohesive and user-friendly interface to guide the entire review and QC process
Document development steps and logic
Present findings and prototypes to the Bioanalytical Science and Translational Data Science teams
Requirements
Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's/HBO or Master's in bioinformatics, data science, or a related field, at a Dutch University.
Available for a minimum of 6 months (up to 12 months).
Experience with programming in R, shiny and Python for data analysis.
Experience with natural language processing or Shiny is a plus.
Demonstrates creativity, strong analytical thinking, organizational skills, a collaborative spirit, and a proactive attitude.
