Overview

A unique 4–5 week internship for high school students interested in the fields of chemistry, biology, and data science. The internship will focus on developing a data processing method to determine the physiochemical properties of tryptic and non-tryptic peptides identified using timsTOF mass spectrometers. This data will be key in gaining a better understanding of the biophysical properties of peptides identified by the timsTOF and those that we do not identify (based on all theoretical peptides in the proteome). This hands-on opportunity will allow students to gain experience in scientific research, data analysis, and computational techniques and grow their understanding of the biochemistry of proteins and peptides. The intern will also work with a Bruker scientist to acquire data on a timsTOF mass spectrometer to compare the effect of changing acquisition parameters has on distribution of peptides identified.

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in processing data from the timsTOF mass spectrometer, focusing on peptide identification and quantification.
  • Help develop methods to calculate key properties of peptides such as molecular weight, charge, and hydrophobicity.
  • Observation of sample handling and processing via Bruker instrumentation.

This interdisciplinary internship will provide a great opportunity to gain an understanding of how cutting-edge mass spectrometry platforms are applied to the field of proteomics with an emphasis on bringing together data science, biochemistry, and mass spectrometry. The lifting requirement for this position is a maximum of 20 lbs.

Requirements:  The student should have a basic understanding of a programing language such as python or R and some basic understanding of biochemistry (chemistry).
