The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) is seeking a dynamic AI Engineer to join our Data & Analytics team.

This role is based in Basel, Switzerland however, thanks to our status as an international organization, we can hire globally and welcome applications from candidates of all nationalities and located anywhere in the world. Relocation support is available for the successful candidate and their dependent family members.

Purpose of the role:

Our mission is to support central banks' pursuit of monetary and financial stability through international partnership and to act as a bank for central banks.

You will contribute to this mission as a member of the ITS Data & Analytics team, which is responsible for data and analytics platforms and applications for the bank. The team is expanding to deliver cutting-edge AI applications, and you will play a key role in this exciting new initiative. Your expertise in building AI applications will be crucial in delivering high-priority AI use cases.

Principal accountabilities:

·       As an AI Engineer, you will focus on the implementation of various AI and data projects. To succeed, you will need a broad set of AI and data engineering skills, along with experience in agile software development methodologies. Your typical responsibilities will include:

·       Designing and developing key AI applications for the bank.

·       Playing an active role in the entire lifecycle of AI application development, including requirements gathering, identifying data dependencies, handling data quality issues, setting up data integration pipelines, leveraging AI tools, and application deployment.

·       Setting team standards for tool and framework selection, architecture, managing data quality for AI, evaluating AI results, fine-tuning models, AI platform, and infrastructure, etc.

·       Improving observability and understandability of AI models.

·       Supporting the AI infrastructure to ensure greater scalability, high availability, security, and resiliency, spanning both on-premises and Azure cloud.

·       Contributing to the Generative AI community within the bank by sharing industry trends and best practices.

Qualifications, skills, and experience:

·       A university degree in information technology or a related subject area; or, equivalent work experience.

·       Proficiency in at least one major programming language (e.g., Java, Python) and the ability to pick up new tech skills independently.

·       Proven experience in developing Generative AI applications (Python).

·       Deep knowledge of popular industry frameworks in the Generative AI and AI space, such as LangChain, OpenAI, RAG frameworks, and evaluation utilities.

·       Experience in building and supporting data engineering pipelines in a data warehousing/data analytics environment.

·       Hands-on experience in preparing vast quantities of unstructured and structured data for AI projects.

·       Experience with the Azure cloud environment, including setting up, securing, and monitoring resources.

·       Knowledge of DevOps processes and container platforms such as OpenShift (or similar).

·       Previous experience in NLP, text analytics, and machine learning projects is desirable.

·       Experience with Agile methodologies and Scrum.

·       Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts in simple terms.
