About ZwillGen

ZwillGen is a boutique law firm representing some of the biggest names in technology on a wide range of internet-related legal issues, including cybersecurity, privacy, government surveillance, alternative data, litigation, and fantasy sports.

We offer a hardworking yet casual and collaborative work environment that sets us apart from large law firms. At ZwillGen, we have casual attire, on-site massages, snacks and beverages, an on-site gym in our DC office, and a monthly perks program. Our culture prioritizes work-life balance, mutual respect, and inclusivity, with weekly firm meetings that bring everyone together.

About the Role

We are looking for a data scientist to help our clients identify, design, evaluate, and monitor their AI models – from product design to deployment and all points of data collection and management.  You’ll be working as part of a team including both other data scientists and lawyers to support a broad range of efforts at the intersection of technology and law. In this position, you’ll help craft technically-sound AI and data governance practices as well as test whether companies have effectively implemented model validation, bias mitigation, deidentification, and other quantitative methods of assessing AI integration into commercial products and services. Close collaboration and strong communication are central to our work, in addition to a deep understanding of the statistical and technical requirements of AI engineering.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assess AI systems with respect to AI governance frameworks, ensuring compliance with evolving legal and regulatory standards.
  • Evaluate machine learning models for performance, fairness, and bias mitigation, applying quantitative methods to validate AI integration.
  • Conduct statistical analysis to assess AI decision-making and its compliance with ethical and legal guidelines.
  • Collaborate with legal teams to translate technical findings into actionable legal and policy recommendations.
  • Assist clients in developing and implementing deidentification techniques to enhance data privacy.
  • Stay up to date with emerging trends in AI regulation, model auditing, red teaming, and data security.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Master’s or Ph.D. in Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, AI, or a related field.
  • Strong expertise in machine learning, statistical analysis, and algorithmic bias detection.
  • Experience with AI model development, validation, explainability, and risk mitigation techniques, including for large language models (LLMs).
  • Strong proficiency in Python data science stack (e.g., NumPy, Pandas, scikit-learn) for quantitative analysis and experience with AI/ML frameworks (TensorFlow, PyTorch, scikit-learn, etc.).
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to work collaboratively across technical and legal teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Hands-on experience training or fine-tuning LLMs using libraries like PyTorch or TensorFlow.
  • Experience with LLM evaluation, prompt engineering, and explainability techniques.
  • Familiarity with bias and fairness-related testing methodology (for both predictive and generative AI), including relevant metrics and benchmarks.
  • Direct experience with conducting AI system audits, AI red teaming, or other adversarial testing.
  • The ability to balance independent work and close collaboration; strong initiative and creative approaches to new situations and challenges is a plus.
  • Familiarity with legal and ethical AI principles, including GDPR, CCPA, and emerging AI regulations.

Compensation & Benefits

ZwillGen is committed to pay transparency in accordance with applicable wage laws. The salary range for this position is $110,000 – $160,000 annually, based on qualifications, skills, and level of experience.

We offer a comprehensive benefits package, including:

  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401(k) retirement plan
  • Paid time off and parental leave
  • Short-term and long-term disability coverage
  • Eligibility for the firm’s Perks! fringe benefit program
