Meet the Team

The Autonomy Systems and Safety team ensures that autonomy application software is architected, implemented, and maintained to meet product, safety, and regulatory requirements. These activities are aligned with the Technology Roadmap to support robust, scalable designs.

We provide systems and safety leadership by analyzing requirements, defining architectures, managing deployment budgets, and maintaining technology roadmaps. We pioneer safe machine learning (ML) practices, Functional Safety and SOTIF methodologies to enable adherence to safety standards.

We deliver logical and deployment architectures, technology roadmaps, safe software designs, and risk assessments that enable autonomy applications to meet functional, safety, and regulatory requirements.

What You'll Do

  • Safety Risk Assessment: Conduct thorough risk assessments for autonomy application layer software, identifying potential hazards and ensuring risks are mitigated effectively.
  • Safe Machine Learning Practices: Develop and implement strategies to ensure the safety, robustness and reliability of machine learning components in autonomous applications.
  • Standards Compliance: Lead efforts to comply with safety standards such as ISO 26262 (Functional Safety) Part 6, ISO 21448 (Safety of the Intended Functionality), and other relevant frameworks, including ISO PAS 8800 Road Vehicles Safety and Artificial Intelligence, UL 4600, etc.
  • Safety Architecture Design: Collaborate with the systems engineering team to integrate safety requirements into logical and deployment architectures, ensuring seamless alignment with overall product goals.
  • Safety Case Development: Create and maintain safety case artifacts and mechanisms to demonstrate compliance with regulatory and functional safety requirements.
  • Collaboration: Work with product, perception, and vehicle intent teams, as well as safety and compliance organizations, to ensure safety is a fundamental part of every stage of development.

What You'll Need to Succeed:

  • 2+ years applied SOTIF experience and Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Robotics, Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Safety Expertise: Experience conducting safety analyses, such as Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), Hazard Analysis and Risk Assessment (HARA) analysis, or similar techniques. Deep understanding of safety-critical systems and a passion for ensuring autonomous technologies are safe and reliable.
  • Standards Knowledge: Proficiency with safety standards like ISO 26262 Part 6, especially ISO 21448, or equivalent frameworks.
  • Software Experience: Understanding of software architecture for autonomous systems, including experience with safety-critical software design. Understanding of software knowledge of C/C++, Python.
  • Risk Mitigation: Analytical mindset with the ability to identify, assess, and mitigate complex safety risks.
  • Strong communication skills: to clearly convey safety requirements, assessments, and solutions to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Team Collaboration: Collaborative approach, working seamlessly across teams to advocate for and implement safety best practices.

Bonus Points!

  • Ph.D. in a related field or equivalent experience.
  • Familiarity with safe machine learning frameworks and tools.
  • Experience working with robotics or autonomous vehicle systems.
  • Knowledge of pipeline failure mode analysis or similar methodologies.
  • Hands-on experience with safety case development tools and processes.
  • Ability to train and upskill experienced Engineers on SOTIF
