General Summary:
Unum Group seeks Senior Data Scientists in Chattanooga, TN.

- Programming & Process Automation: Use Python and R to build analytical solutions that deliver insights, leveraging Azure DevOps for CI/CD and version control, and deploying models through AWS SageMaker, Posit Workbench, and Posit Connect. Apply Language Models and automation to optimize workflows in business settings.
- Data Visualization: Transform complex data into impactful visuals using tools like Seaborn, Matplotlib, Plotly, ggplot2, and Lattice. Create visuals that drive business decisions, with a proven record in both static and dynamic representation techniques.
- Data Validation: Ensure data accuracy through SQL and data frames in Python and R. Develop robust validation, aggregation, and reconciliation processes to maintain data quality for complex business needs.
- Statistics & Statistical Modeling: Build statistical models, including time series forecasting, GLMs, Bayesian methods, and deep learning. Apply feature extraction and dimensionality reduction for enhanced model performance in business problem-solving.
- Data Extraction, Transformation, and Loading (ETL): Integrate data from diverse sources like Snowflake, AWS, DB2, SQL Server, APIs, and Teradata. Proficiently write complex SQL queries to join disparate datasets, creating models that support both ad-hoc analysis and larger studies.
- Time Series Forecasting and Advanced Analytics: Conduct forecasting for industry applications (e.g., claims prediction, loss forecasting, trend analysis), using deep learning and dimensionality reduction to improve model accuracy for strategic decision-making.
- Core Business Capabilities: Clearly communicate analytical insights to influence executive decisions, utilizing tools such as MS Office, RMarkdown, and Quarto. Proven track record in translating data science into business value, particularly in the insurance industry.
- Leadership Capabilities: Mentor junior team members, fostering innovation and thought leadership. Lead projects within data science, particularly in insurance or similar industries, and drive process improvements in collaborative environments.
Requires a Bachelor's degree in Information Technology/Systems, Statistics, Mathematics, Business Economics, Engineering, or a related field plus 4 years of related experience. Requires 4 years of experience with the following: Utilizing SQL and data frames (Python and R) to apply data validation, aggregation, and reconciliation techniques to ensure accurate, modeling-ready data for business use cases; Providing creative solutions for ensuring data integrity and quality in complex business datasets; Thinking critically and developing models that solve complex business problems; SQL query writing and complex joins; Developing efficient and thoughtful data extraction processes that align with business goals; Interpreting the results of analytics and presenting findings in formats that drive business stakeholder decisions; Translating data science outcomes to direct business value, utilizing tools like MS Office (PowerPoint, Word) and RMarkdown/Quarto; Presenting innovative and thoughtful insights that lead to actionable business outcomes. Requires 3 years of experience with the following: Using both Python and R to design and execute analytical solutions, including optimization, simulation, Machine Learning, and other statistical methods with a focus on delivering actionable value; Using AWS SageMaker, Posit Workbench and Posit Connect, Quarto, and Language Models while deploying these in business-related contexts; Using Azure DevOps for version control, CI/CD pipelines, and project management in business environments; Transforming complex data sets and quantitative/qualitative analyses into compelling visuals using tools such as Seaborn, Matplotlib, Plotly, ggplot2, and Lattice to drive insights that influence business decisions; Creating innovative visual representations that effectively communicate key findings to stakeholders; Developing advanced statistical models tailored to industry needs, including but not limited to time series forecasting, univariate/multivariate analysis, generalized linear models, and Bayesian approaches; Dimension reduction and deep learning techniques; Integrating large volumes of data from multiple disparate sources (including Snowflake, AWS, DB2, SQL Server, APIs, and Teradata) to create robust data assets for ad-hoc analyses and larger studies; Time series forecasting for industry applications, including claims prediction, loss forecasting, and trend analysis; Deep learning models and dimension reduction techniques to enhance forecasting accuracy; Developing forecasting models that help drive business decisions. Requires 2 years of experience with the following: Providing collaborative support, training, and mentorship to junior Data Science peers; Fostering innovation and thought leadership within a data science team; Data Science. Telecommuting permitted.
40 hours/week; $115,000 - $135,000 per year. This wage range supersedes the base salary range listed below, due to the salary range below reflecting a national range.

The base salary range for applicants for this position is listed below. Unless actual salary is indicated above in the job description, actual pay will be based on skill, geographical location and experience.
$89,400.00-$183,500.00Additionally, Unum offers a portfolio of benefits and rewards that are competitive and comprehensive including healthcare benefits (health, vision, dental), insurance benefits (short & long-term disability), performance-based incentive plans, paid time off, and a 401(k) retirement plan with an employer match up to 5% and an additional 4.5% contribution whether you contribute to the plan or not. All benefits are subject to the terms and conditions of individual Plans.
