Dir Data Engineering - GE06AE

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Data Engineering Delivery Lead to oversee and drive the successful execution and delivery of data engineering projects. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in strategy, execution, timely delivery, quality, and building high-performing teams. This role requires a proactive leader who can manage end-to-end implementation, support delivery of solutions, and ensure continuous improvement across the value stream. The role’s focus is to deliver value by managing and/or facilitating program-level delivery via consistency in engineering processes, operational execution, innovation, program dashboard management, team integrations, escalating impediments, managing risk, and continuous improvement to deliver value.

This role will have a Hybrid work schedule, with the expectation of working in an office location (Hartford, CT and Charlotte, NC) 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday).

Key Responsibilities:

Strategy & Investment Funding:

  • Determine value stream funding needs by leveraging input from other leaders in the portfolio
  • Guide the flow of epics through the portfolio kanban
  • Oversee the measurement of business outcomes and monitor value stream forecast and actuals against budget
  • Drive continuous improvement in Agile practices
  • Oversee adoption of delivery metrics in the portfolio

Implementation and Delivery:

  • Drive end-to-end implementation via Agile Release Trains (ARTs) and/or Program
  • Support delivery of solutions in the value stream to successfully deliver new capabilities or maintain existing capabilities
  • Provide input into Epic/Feature backlog refinement activities
  • Remove impediments and proactively address risks and issues across the Value Stream/ARTs
  • Manage the health and progress of the value stream, serving as a primary escalation point for Asset Owners, APMs, and Release Train Engineers (RTEs)
  • Measure performance and success metrics across the value stream and promote continuous improvement activities

Engineering and Development:

  • Accountable for development and delivery of high-quality data solutions aligning to the architectural design and business needs and engineering best practices
  • Drive code quality, automation, DevSecOps/Data Ops for the entire ART and contribute towards successful delivery of work
  • Actively practice frameworks like Behavior-Driven Development (BDD), Test-Driven Development (TDD), continuous integration, and automated testing as part of development
  • Remove impediments across the ART for software/data engineers
  • Continuously champion Agile frameworks to release and deploy iterations of services or code

Agile Release Train Leadership:

  • Facilitate delivery and be accountable for execution of the train
  • Partner with APM and Agile Product Owners (APOs) to build out the PI Roadmap, staying 2-3 PIs ahead
  • Accountable for setting release plan cadence and using rally to clearly articulate progress towards that plan
  • Serve as a servant-leader for an Agile Release Train
  • Coach and educate the Agile Release Train on Agile methodologies
  • Identify opportunities for continuous improvement
  • Facilitate ART-level Agile events, including preparation and readiness for the events

Leadership and Team Management:

  • Lead and manage approximately 8-10 agile teams across multiple geographic locations, including Directors, Managers, Scrum Masters, Data Architects, Data Engineers, and Business Data Analysts
  • Provide leadership, mentoring, and coaching to direct reports
  • Manage and coordinate strategic direction for staff
  • Attract, retain, develop, and motivate top talent
  • Conduct annual and mid-year reviews, reviewing individual development plans and providing performance feedback
  • Create a high-performing team that has a culture of continuous learning, collaboration, and is focused on business outcomes

Qualifications:

  • Proven experience in strategy and investment funding, lean governance, and agile portfolio operations
  • Strong background in IT service management and engineering
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and collaboration skills
  • Ability to drive continuous improvement and manage complex projects
  • Proficiency in Agile methodologies and frameworks
  • 8+ years of experience in leading Data organizations with expertise in building and/or managing large-scale data assets
  • In-depth knowledge of data management strategies, practices, and principles
  • Experience establishing frameworks for data quality, data governance, stewardship, and metadata management
  • Ability to lead a data-related portfolio that includes transformational initiatives
  • Ability to collaborate and partner with business leaders and IT/infrastructure teams
  • Experience in leading Agile teams, SAFe experience is a plus
  • Strong leadership and influencing skills at the senior management level
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with an ability to communicate effectively across multiple levels of the organization
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to manage teams made up of both employees and vendor partners that are located in multiple geographies
  • Experience with cloud-based data-related platforms and open-source data-related technologies is beneficial
  • Experience with building data warehouses/lakes that are downstream from packaged applications such as Guidewire, Duck Creek, SalesForce or XML-based applications are beneficial
  • Bachelor's degree or Master's degree in Computer Science or related fields
  • Demonstrate a willingness to challenge the status quo
  • Demonstrate a bias for action

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$156,000 - $234,000
