SAIT’s Information Technology Services department handles all software and hardware needs, as well as technological and networking issues for both employees and students who rely heavily on computer systems across our campuses. Technical support — which includes help with computer hardware and software technical problems, email, audio-visual needs and more — is available to everyone at SAIT, whether the problem occurs at home or on-campus.
The Opportunity
We're hiring a Data Governance Specialist!Join our Data Governance Office as a key player in establishing and maintaining SAIT's data governance framework.
You'll define and implement policies to ensure data security, privacy, and quality. And, manage data stewardship, promote data literacy, and conduct impact analyses to assess project risks and benefits.
Key Responsibilities:- Develop and enforce data-related policies and procedures- Manage data stewardship and partner engagement- Promote data literacy and conduct impact analyses- Collaborate with data stewards, technical teams, and business partners- Ensure compliance with data regulations and governance best practices- Report to the Supervisor, Data Management

The Role

  • Data Governance Frameworks: Define and implement policies, procedures, and standards; ensure compliance with privacy and security regulations.
  • Program Activities: Coordinate DG Working Sessions and support Operational Committee meetings.
  • Data Literacy: Develop and deliver training on governance principles and tools.
  • Governance Documentation: Create and update policies, data dictionaries, guidelines, procedures, user guides, and process flows.
  • Data Catalog & Glossary: Support operations and align definitions and standards.
  • Data Quality & Master Data Management (MDM) Initiatives: Collaborate with the data leads on governance efforts.
  • Data Stewardship: Establish accountability and promote best practices.
  • Data Classification: Ensure proper handling of sensitive data with the Security team.
  • Business Rules & Standards: Document rules and standards with stewards and trustees.
  • Impact Analysis: Evaluate risks and benefits of data initiatives.
  • Collaboration: Facilitate communication between trustees, stewards, partners, change management specialists and IT teams.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Minimum:
  • Post-secondary degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, or related field
  • 5+ years of experience in data management or data governance
  • Direct experience with data management platforms (e.g., Ataccama One, Collibra, Informatica)
  • Knowledge of data privacy regulations (e.g., GDPR, PIPEDA)
  • Experience supporting and working with cross-functional teams in a dynamic environment
  • Experience implementing data innovation initiatives & staying current with emerging trends

  • Preferred:
  • 5+ years of experience in data governance within large, complex organizations, preferably in higher education
  • Experience in leading or coordinating Data Governance Committees or similar governance structures
  • Experience leading enterprise-wide Data Governance Programs, including data standards, partner engagement, and operational oversight
  • Certified Data Management Professional (CDMP) by DAMA International or equivalent
  • Data Governance and Stewardship Professional (DGSP) by the Data Governance Professionals Organization (DGPO)
