The Role
Neo Financial seeks a motivated Intermediate Data Scientist with a focus in credit risk modeling to join our dynamic and high-performing Data Science team. In this role, you will contribute directly to Neo's mission of building a better financial future for all Canadians by applying data science principles within a rapidly scaling fintech environment. This position offers a significant opportunity for professional growth, allowing you to develop your technical skills and gain practical experience by tackling complex business challenges. You will collaborate closely with experienced professionals, contributing to impactful projects while embodying Neo's core values of Teamwork, Ownership, and Professional Integrity.
What you'll be doing:
- Monitor existing credit risk models for performance deterioration
- Redevelop existing credit risk models with more recent data and business changes or performance deterioration
- Ensure any updated model still fits business usage and assist in analysis of downstream impact
- Develop new ML models based on credit risk’s business needs
- Documentation of updated or newly developed models for business audience
- Enhancing model explainability and business trust
- Establishing rigorous model validation frameworks (e.g., OOT validation, temporal splits, cross-validation) to ensure high model quality and generalization
- Partnering with business teams to ensure models are solving real business problems and delivering commercial value
Who we are looking for:
- An intermediate-level Data Scientist with a focus in credit risk modeling with 2+ years relevant experience, who has proven success developing ML models for financial fraud and/or losses, with an emphasis on reducing credit loss
- Technical expertise with Python (including pandas, scikit-learn), and tree-based/ML modeling (Random forest, XGBoost)
- Strong ML validation testing, such as OOT testing, and robust backtesting.
- Ability to explain, present and document models in a business friendly way
- A pragmatic, business-first mindset — someone who can move fast, prioritize delivering value in days/weeks (not months), and thrive in an ambiguous, fast-paced environment
- Experience with Git and Sagemaker is a plus
