The Applied Research, Innovation and Economic Development Directorate invites applications for the position of Postdoctoral Researcher to work on a QNRF-funded research project titled:

“Autonomous Multi-Layer Resource Management for Critical Infrastructure: Electrical Power/Water/Transportation Nexus”Project Number: AICC04-0809-210014

The postdoctoral researcher will contribute to the development and integration of advanced algorithms, hardware, and control systems for multi-agent and IoT-based platforms to support power quality improvement and autonomous management of critical infrastructure.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will work under the guidance of the project’s Principal Investigator at UDST, Dr. Morcos Metry, and in collaboration with international partners including TAMUQ and METU. The main areas of responsibility include:

  • Design and application of machine learning techniques for resource forecasting and optimization
  • Analysis of IoT-collected data related to energy, water, and transportation systems
  • Design and prototyping of power electronic converter hardware
  • Control systems development for optimal operation of power converters
  • Real-time simulation and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing
  • Embedded systems programming (microcontrollers, DSPs, FPGAs)
  • Experimental validation of integrated systems involving advanced power converter topologies
  • Documentation of research findings and preparation of technical reports
  • Writing high-quality journal and conference papers
  • Presentation of research outcomes at group meetings, peer review events, and international conferences
  • Development of innovative solutions for utility-scale converters in applications such as energy storage, power quality improvement, and smart grid operations
  • Active collaboration with local and international researchers, institutions, and industry stakeholders

Qualifications

  • A PhD in Electrical Engineering from a recognized university
  • A strong publication record with at least 5 Q1 journal papers in the last 3 years
  • Solid background in applied research and hands-on experience in power converter design, simulation, control, testing, and reliability analysis
  • Demonstrated expertise in AI applications for power systems and renewable energy
  • Proficiency in English (written and spoken)

Preferable Research Experience and Skills

  • Extensive experience in renewable energy systems and smart grid technologies
  • Hands-on skills in power electronics design, prototyping, and control
  • Experience with electric vehicle motor control and charging system development
  • Strong skills in embedded systems, sensor integration, and Python programming for AI applications
  • Knowledge of dynamic modeling of power systems, microgrids, and real-time control
  • Familiarity with EMS/DMS and IoT platform development
  • Understanding of reliability and resilience principles in distribution grids
  • Experience with energy storage technologies and system integration
  • Ability to develop and deploy AI models for fault classification and prediction in electrical networks
  • Ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams and independently meet research goals
  • Strong analytical, computational, and problem-solving abilities
  • Experience in mentoring students and working in research-focused teams
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Proven track record in scientific writing and presenting research at conferences
