The Data Governance Officer is responsible for managing data and information as a strategic enterprise asset. This role involves implementing and promoting the data governance framework, ensuring data integrity, security, and compliance, and driving the adoption of best practices across the organization. The officer will collaborate with business and technical stakeholders to establish policies, standards, and processes that support data quality, data security, data classification, and data lifecycle management.
Key aspects of data governance include:
- Defining and enforcing policies and standards
- Managing reference data and data inventories
- Ensuring data classification, profiling, and lineage
- Overseeing data security and access controls
- Monitoring compliance and data risk management
- Supporting decision-making processes
- Implementing full lifecycle data management
The Data Governance Officer will:
- Build and maintain an audit of Aperam’s core systems and information assets, mapping teams and processes that use them.
- Define and maintain ownership accountability for corporate data systems.
- Create and maintain Aperam’s data catalogue, identifying master data sets, metadata, and usage.
- Support the development and execution of the data governance policy across the business.
- Define, implement, and manage the data governance program.
- Establish and own the corporate taxonomy and ontology, setting governance rules for their application.
- Align the data governance framework with Aperam’s enterprise information strategy.
- Embed information security strategy into data governance initiatives.
- Recommend data redundancy reduction strategies and promote appropriate data reuse.
- Continuously identify and mitigate risks in alignment with the company's risk management approach.
- Support data stewardship activities, ensuring data quality, retention, and compliance.
- Develop and enforce data quality metrics beyond the data warehouse.
- Define and implement data governance policies and standards to enhance effectiveness and efficiency.
- Participate in relevant project planning to integrate data governance best practices.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills—able to engage stakeholders across all levels.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a structured approach.
- Exceptional writing and documentation skills to create clear policies, standards, and specifications.
- Ability to embed data governance within business processes and systems.
- Capacity to work independently while managing multiple priorities.
- Adaptability, flexibility, and collaboration with technical and non-technical teams.
- Willingness to travel to Aperam offices and other required locations.
- Basic understanding of data systems, system architecture, and data warehouses.
- Experience in requirements gathering for data systems.
- Knowledge of data lifecycle management, data modeling, and master data management.
- Ability to define and document business requirements.
- Familiarity with database principles and terminology.
- Exposure to large-scale technical projects.
- Understanding of data governance frameworks and protocols.
- Strong interviewing and active listening skills to extract key information.
- Certification or qualification in data governance or information management.
- Experience in records management or information management disciplines.
- Understanding of financial and accountancy terminology.
- Knowledge of IT security and data protection principles.
- Experience with system testing and test script development.
- Familiarity with Agile project management methodologies.
- Experience using Agile project management tools (e.g., Pivotal Tracker).
