The selected colleague will work at an MUFG office or client sites four days per week and work remotely one day. A member of our recruitment team will provide more details.

Reporting into the Global Head of Global Financial Crimes Division (GFCD) System Design, Tuning and Optimization (DTO), this new position has been created for the purpose of leading the sanctions screening capabilities for MUFG. 

Introduction: 

One of several key positions in the GFCD DTO Operations function, this role will be responsible for the global strategic vision and will manage several vice presidents executing tuning and optimization. The incumbent will also be responsible for anticipating future risks MUFG may be exposed to, building the Program to mitigate them, understanding regulatory expectations, and acting as the liaison with regulators for all tuning and optimization-related topics. This role will support leadership to ensure a globally consistent effort that enables continuous improvement to the sanctions screening capabilities and further mitigates potential financial crime.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Leadership: Provide strategic direction and oversight for the development and enhancement of the Sanctions Tuning & Optimization Methodology, ensuring alignment with global standards and regulatory requirements.

  • Regulatory Liaison: Act as the primary point of contact with regulators for all topics relating to tuning and optimization, ensuring compliance with all relevant regulations, and effectively communicating MUFG’s approach to sanctions screening.

  • Screening Effectiveness and Efficiency: Lead the tuning and optimization program to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of algorithms and rules, proactively identifying and mitigating sanctions risks to safeguard the organization.

  • Technical Oversight: Manage the team focused on the technical aspects of the sanctions screening applications, including and in-depth understanding of the configuration decisions possible for each vendor product used

  • Audits, Testing, and Model Validations: Oversee that the sanctions screening program is well positioned to meet all expectations from internal audits, independent testing, model validations, etc

  • Policy Development: Support the development of policies and procedures for the sanctions screening lifecycle, ensuring adherence to best practices and regulatory standards.

  • Performance Monitoring: Monitor and evaluate the performance of sanctions and name screening systems, implementing continuous improvements to enhance screening accuracy and efficiency.

  • Team Leadership: Provide leadership and mentorship to vice presidents and other team members, fostering a culture of compliance, innovation, and continuous improvement.

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Coordinate with Global teams and other functional teams within GFCD to ensure effective and efficient operations with clearly defined roles and responsibilities.

Qualifications:

  • Significant experience with sanctions transaction and name screening

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in designing, analyzing, testing and/or validating sanctions screening systems/models

  • Has presented sanctions screening systems to government regulators, auditors, independent testers, and model validators

  • Proven track record of strong quantitative testing and statistical analysis techniques as it pertains to Sanctions models, including name similarity matching, fuzzy logic matching, machine learning, etc.

  • Expertise with both US and non-US sanctions regulations and regulatory expectations

  • Working knowledge of one or more of the following programming languages or an equivalent: Python, SQL, SAS, R

  • Familiarity with vendor software such as CGI Hotscan, Actimize WLF, and SWIFT STS or an equivalent

  • Expertise in financial crime model risk management and associated regulatory requirements

  • Experience interacting with the Executive Committee Leadership, control function leadership, and compliance subject matter experts

  • Proven excellence in execution in complex and demanding situations

  • Collaborative with strong interpersonal communication skills

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business Information Systems, Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Data Analysis/Programming, or a related field

  • Master’s or Doctoral degree a plus.

The typical base pay range for this role is between $169K - $209K depending on job-related knowledge, skills, experience and location. This role may also be eligible for certain discretionary performance-based bonus and/or incentive compensation.
