Reporting to the Director of Business Intelligence of Enterprise Data and Solutions of Information Technology, the Data Visualization Analyst is a key contributor to the Business Intelligence team responsible for the development of BI solutions through dashboards, reports, and data visualizations to answer key data and business questions for decision support. The role analyzes complex datasets to solve business issues, ensures data quality, and ensures that data policies and standards are enforced across the College’s ecosystem. The Analyst will participate in multi-year BI program initiatives in designing, developing, testing, and training business users on BI products. This position requires hands-on dashboard development experience, with solid data analysis and data modeling skills. Experience developing solutions using industry-leading BI tools, such as Tableau. The position plays a key role in the creation and delivery of the business intelligence strategy that shapes the future of the college’s data analytics. Excellent data query and data analytical ability, as well as strong academic and business knowledge, are essential.

This is a time-limited position not exceeding 36 months from the date of hire.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

  • Contribute to the strategic planning process for business intelligence initiatives, recommend innovative technologies, methods, industry-leading tools, and best practices, and design and maintain a system to warehouse data and information, including structured and unstructured data sets.
  • Develop queries, tables, and views in Snowflake to support the 5-year Data Strategy roadmap for Emerson College.
  • Support the Alteryx ETL deployment and process through recommendations, development, and prototyping.
  • Scale Tableau platforms through building advanced dashboards and incorporating new and diversified data sources. Actively organize and participate in data literacy, report, and dashboard training for key business users. Through storytelling, we can evolve data analytics for department engagement.
  • Use complex data analysis and queries, data science, and data modeling techniques to develop reports and data analytics solutions for decision support. This includes developing data models and engineering solutions in the form of business dashboards, reports, and data visualizations, as well as integrating them with other third-party applications.
  • Identify performance metrics and KPIs with relevant business area leaders. Apply innovative visualization and data science techniques to develop interactive dashboards and to analyze and interpret trends or patterns using a large data population.
  • Effectively work and collaborate with PMO on BI projects, ensure deliverables are completed on time, and objectives are met.
  • Manage tables and data views within Snowflake Data Warehouse and synchronize with data models with corresponding data mapping and appropriate ETL tools. Keep current on the latest technologies, and develop proof-of-concept prototypes to advance the BI program.
  • Commit to professional development by fostering a climate of team learning, cross-training, and knowledge base building.
  • Handle complex data issues with minimal supervision, while escalating critical issues to management using sound judgment. Enforce data quality, knowledge retention, and process consistency through the curation and expansion of the institutional data dictionary/catalog.
  • Communicate effectively with the internal team and external business users through written, verbal, and visual storytelling. Develop detailed technical specifications, data mapping, and data flow documentations for major data analytics projects.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS – Qualifications are deemed required or preferred and represent what is needed to perform the job effectively.

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Business, or a similar degree, combined with work experience and education equivalent. 
  • 10 years of experience as a data visualization analyst, business intelligence analyst, or advanced report writer required.
  • 5+ years of Tableau Dashboard development experience required.
  • Experience working with data stewards, data governance, and data standards is preferred.
  • Experience working with Ellucian Banner, Slate, Canvas, or Workday preferred
  • Certification in Tableau or other applicable business intelligence tools preferred
  • Experience in data warehouse or data modeling is preferred
  • Higher Education experience preferred

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES – This may be representative but not all-inclusive of the knowledge, skills, and abilities commonly associated with the job. 

  • Strong SQL query and Oracle relational databases skills.
  • Strong Excel skills and efficient use of visual tools.
  • Ability to optimize the performance of dashboards and data sources.
  • Ability to extract diverse datasets, perform data mapping, and perform ETL data transformation.
  • Knowledge of SDLC and project management best practices.

COMPENSATION

Compensation for this position will be between $ 89,900 and $ 112,500 annually, commensurate with experience.

EMPLOYMENT TYPE

This position is defined as a full-time Casual employee, and the duration of employment will not exceed 36 months from the date of hire.

HYBRID

This position is primarily a hybrid role with expected days in the office each week.

The hybrid arrangement will be made upon hire. To ensure operational effectiveness, candidates must reside within a reasonable commuting distance of the Boston campus. This arrangement must be approved as outlined in the Remote Work Policy

Grade of Position: 23-11E

Scheduled Weekly Hours: 36.25
