Alpha Omega is actively looking to fill a position with the NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) Data Stewardship Division (DSD). This division works in partnership with NOAA and the broader community to develop and maintain a robust and efficient infrastructure of hardware, software, and processes to support the ingest, long-term preservation, and delivery of environmental data products spanning the depths of the ocean to the surface of the sun.
As a Software Engineer on our dynamic team, you will be instrumental in bringing our nation’s environmental data into NOAA’s cloud archive. Your technical expertise will be crucial as you work with our Agile team to develop Python code that 1) links descriptive information to scientific data files, 2) integrates those data files into the NOAA archive (hosted by AWS), and 3) ensures that the descriptive information is accessible through discovery portals and AI tools. To guide development, you will collaborate with subject matter experts, as well as perform analysis of data documentation and metadata-rich filenames. Grow your AWS, scientific data, and machine learning skills as you enable scientists from all corners of the globe to better understand the world in which we live.
Key Responsibilities:
- Play a key role in the stewardship of our nation’s environmental data archive.
- Extract requirements through collaboration with subject matter experts and analysis of various sources of descriptive dataset information as you create, test, and debug Python code in AWS Cloud9.
- Build patterns and templates in Amazon SageMaker AI.
Required Qualifications:
Education:
A bachelor's degree with 4+ years of programming experience, or an associate degree with 6+ years of programming experience, or 8+ years of programming experience.
Experience/Skills:
- Strong programming skills in Python.
- The ability to think logically and analytically, and to approach problem solving strategically.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a remote team environment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Proficiency in Atlassian Jira for project management and issue tracking.
- Experience with cloud infrastructures, especially AWS and Cloud9.
- An understanding of graph databases, especially Amazon Neptune.
- Proficiency with relational databases, especially Oracle and PostgreSQL.
- Familiarity with Agile/SAFe Scrum methodologies, with a focus on iterative. development and team collaboration.
- An understanding of scientific data formats, like NetCDF, and related metadata formats.

AWS Certification.
Salary and Benefit Information:
The likely salary range for this position is $97,640- $117,000. This is not, however, a guarantee of compensation or salary. There are multiple factors that are considered in determining final pay for a position, including, but not limited to, relevant work experience, skills, certifications and competencies that align to the specified role, education and certifications as well as contract provisions regarding labor categories that are specific to the position and could fall outside of this range.
