• From $119,056 to $132,475 base salary (HEW Level 8) plus 17% employer's
superannuation and annual leave loading.
• Full-time, 12 month fixed-term contract.
• Newly created role to build AI enablement capabilities with hybrid working arrangement

About the role

A newly created AI Enablement team within IT will play a crucial role in integrating AI solutions across various faculties and departments, driving forward the University's strategic objectives. The team will develop, implement and support AI initiatives and projects across the University, encouraging innovation and enhancing academic and operational excellence through the application of artificial intelligence technologies.

The Cloud AI Engineer will be responsible to develop, test, deploy and maintain Generative AI enabled solutions, ensuring alignment with strategic goals and to ensure services perform to stakeholder expectations of reliability, resilience and efficiency. You will also be responsible for providing technical support and advice to users with Generative AI enabled solutions.  

Reporting to the Manager, AI Enablement, you will:

• Co-ordinate and execute the design, development, implementation, operation and user training for Generative AI solutions across all domains of the organisation.  

• Develop Proof of Concept Gen-AI solutions in Azure or AWS.  

• Setup, run and monitor automated test plans and scenarios. Report test results to internal stakeholders.  

• Deploy approved solutions in production environment. 

• Review and maintain solution performance dashboards. Iterate solution design based on metrics and user feedback. 

• Develop and maintain solution templates for future scaling.  

• Generate consistent and intuitive User Interface to ensure uniform User experience across the university. 

• Create & maintain comprehensive documentation for AI models, APIs, and deployment processes. 

• Engage with vendors and technology groups to stay abreast of the technology learning curve.     

• Implement data privacy and security measures in compliance with university policies and regulations. 

This is fixed term contract ending June 2026.  This role will be based at Macquarie University, Wallumattagal campus, North Ryde.

About You

You are a pragmatic Cloud AI Engineer who turns ambitious ideas into resilient, production-ready platforms. Equal parts architect and hands-on builder, you harness automation, infrastructure-as-code, and cloud-native practices to deliver secure, scalable, and cost-efficient environments that power data-intensive and AI-driven workloads across the university.

You have a strong foundation in software development methodologies, version control, and best practices, coupled with your knowledge of regulatory requirements and ethical considerations in AI such as GDPR, CCPA, and HIPAA, make you a technical expert in the field. You are committed to ongoing professional development and have demonstrated experience working in higher education institutions. Your collaborative approach and problem-solving skills enable you to effectively engage with stakeholders, support project implementation, and drive innovation across the university.

• Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline or equivalent knowledge, skills and minimum 5 years related work experience

• Deep expertise in AWS and Azure architecture and operations, including the Well-Architected Framework, Cloud Adoption Framework, and native security & cost-optimisation best practices.

• Hands-on experience designing, building, and maintaining Infrastructure as Code (IaC) solutions using tools such as Terraform, AWS CloudFormation, AWS CDK, Azure Bicep, and ARM templates.

• Proficiency in automation/scripting with Python, Bash and/or PowerShell to orchestrate infrastructure builds, testing, and day-two operations.

• Experience deploying AI solutions via APIs and integrating cloud-based AI services from multiple vendors.

• Strong understanding of CI/CD pipelines, version control (Git), and DevOps workflows.

• Experience with containerization and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes) for deploying scalable AI solutions in Azure and AWS.

• Experience developing intuitive front-end interfaces using modern frontend frameworks (e.g. React).

• Experience in incident response, resolution, and post-incident analysis of major incidents by applying best practices, including model versioning, monitoring, and lifecycle management.

Desirable:

• Relevant Microsoft/AWS certifications.

• Familiarity with DevOps / SRE methodologies, including GitOps, immutable infrastructure, blue-green & canary deployments, and automated rollback strategies.

• Familiarity with FinOps and cost-governance practices, including cost modelling, tagging strategies, and anomaly detection.
