Principal Data Engineer - Data Management (all genders)

The Data Management department is responsible for products and services that help Zalandos to effectively use, re-use, and distribute data products and ensure their integrity. This includes data governance processes, Zalando’s Data Catalog, Data Quality monitoring, and Zalando's Data Lake & Mesh. 

As part of Zalando’s Data Foundation, we enable thousands of monthly active users like Data and Software Engineers, Analysts, Applied Scientists, and Business Users to work with petabytes of data.'

WHAT WE’D LOVE YOU TO DO (AND LOVE DOING)

• Play a key role in solution designs, supporting compliant and trustful data analytics. Consistently evolve solutions, facilitating short-term delivery towards a long term architecture vision.

• Closely cooperate with multiple different stakeholders e.g. from data, business engineering, information security and law. Represent Data Management as a solution architect.

• Conduct and contribute to deep-dive architecture and solution reviews for data initiatives.

• Provide compliant infrastructure at scale, allowing data builders to efficiently analyze data and develop analytical data products.

• Support the engineering teams in delivering, managing roll-outs, related migrations and reducing technical debt.

• Make sure that the data management services provide high availability, reliability and performance at scale while running cost efficiently with a minimum operational overhead.

• Drive innovations through benchmarking and selection of data technologies and best practices. Cooperate with technology vendors to operationalize and improve their services.

• Be an active member of the Principal Engineering community and contribute to data engineering best practices, (meta-) data management standards, and knowledge sharing.

WE’D LOVE TO MEET YOU IF

• You have practical experience in data infrastructure, industry standard DWH and big data technologies such as SQL, Spark/Databricks, Presto, BigQuery, Redshift operated in a public cloud environment, ideally AWS. 

• You have experience in cooperating with multiple engineering teams over the complete software development life cycle, with a track record as technical lead for bigger data or data infrastructure engineering challenges with multiple stakeholders and as reviewer and author of technical narratives. 

• You have hands-on exposure to state-of-the-art software engineering practices like container based computing platforms (Docker, Kubernetes), test automation, CI/CD practices, system operation tools and methods (e.g. for tracing, monitoring, alerting).

• You have knowledge in data security, privacy and other regulatory requirements and experience in the design of data protection and data access control mechanisms. 

• You have experience in database or system operation at scale, in system integration and running systems with high availability, reliability, performance and cost efficiency. 

• You have experience in data engineering, building analytical data products and strong understanding of how a data platform best empowers builders to efficiently work with data.

• You are able to role model in sharing knowledge, training, mentoring, and contributing to raise mastery of engineering teams.

• You have experience in technical cooperation and alignment with third party technology vendors and service providers.
