About the Job

We are seeking an experienced Metrology Director to join our semiconductor start-up and lead the establishment of a world-class metrology function within our wafer fabrication facility. This role is responsible for the deployment, and management of metrology tools, setting up a Six Sigma-driven quality control (QC) system with SPC controls, and developing an advanced metrology with process control (APC) program leveraging AI and machine learning systems. As part of the Engineering department, you will lead and manage metrology systems and processes, guiding a team to deploy standard metrology systems and develop advanced solutions to meet the unique challenges of our technology.

In your day-to-day work, you will lead the metrology team, while ensuring the selection, optimisation, and operation of metrology equipment and processes are in alignment with the goals of our pilot line facility. This position demands strong leadership, technical expertise, and the ability to operate effectively in a dynamic, innovative environment.

Join our portfolio company: A German hardware company focused on designing and manufacturing cutting-edge microchips. The transformative startup offers energy-efficient and high-performance components for multiple industries.

In this role, you’ll:

  • Lead future selection, procurement, and current qualification of metrology equipment, ensuring alignment with process and device requirements
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive metrology data management and integration strategy, collaborating with automation and IT teams
  • Establish and maintain a Six Sigma-based QC system, including robust Statistical Process Control (SPC) frameworks for all key process steps
  • Build and mentor a high-performing team of process and equipment engineers to support metrology operations and continuous improvement
  • Develop and deploy advanced process control (APC) solutions, integrating AI and machine learning to enable real-time process monitoring, defect detection, and yield enhancement
  • Drive calibration, maintenance, and reliability programs for all metrology tools, ensuring compliance with industry standards and maximizing tool uptime
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with process, integration, and manufacturing teams to ensure metrology solutions meet evolving technology and production needs
  • Support the engineering teams’ analysis of metrology data to identify process deviations, root causes, and improvement opportunities, presenting actionable insights to technical and executive stakeholders
  • Foster a culture of innovation, continuous improvement, and professional development within the metrology team
  • Support the ramp-up of the fab’s pilot line and adapt metrology strategies to the unique challenges of a start-up environment

Your Profile

  • Advanced degree (MS/PhD preferred) in engineering, physics, materials science, or a related field
  • 5+ years of experience in semiconductor metrology, including tool selection, process control, and team leadership in a wafer fab environment
  • Proven expertise in implementing Six Sigma, SPC, and advanced QC methodologies in high-tech manufacturing
  • Hands-on experience with a range of metrology tools (e.g., optical, CD-SEM, AFM, thin film, scatterometry) and their integration into fab processes
  • Strong programming/data analysis skills (e.g., Python, SQL, Matlab) and experience with AI/machine learning applications in manufacturing
  • Demonstrated ability to build and lead technical teams, manage projects, and communicate effectively across organizational levels
  • Experience working in fast-paced, dynamic start-up or pilot-line environments is highly desirable
  • Excellent communication skills in English

Please note that we are looking for support in the Aachen office of our portfolio company. Eligibility to work within the EU is required as well.
