Job Overview

As one of the oldest medical schools in the country, the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine (COM) has a reputation for training best-in-class healthcare professionals and developing cutting-edge procedures and research that improves the health and clinical care of patients.

 

The Department of Biostatistics, Health Informatics and Data Sciences at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine is the focal point for education, research and team science involving biomedical data sciences and informatics. The department’s 12 full-time faculty are experts in biostatistics, bioinformatics, and clinical informatics, and are the home of the PhD program in Biomedical Informatics, and the PhD program in Biostatistics and Data Sciences. The department and college provide rich collaborative opportunities in basic, translational, and clinical research.  

 

The Department of Biostatistics, Health Informatics and Data Sciences is seeking a full-time faculty to establish an independent research program in methodological and collaborative research focused on Generative Artificial Intelligence and its applications in healthcare and biomedicine. The ideal candidate must hold a PhD and possess strong methodological expertise in areas such as generative AI, machine learning, decision support methods, and the evaluation and validation of AI-driven decision support systems in medical and clinical settings. This individual should have a strong research record, demonstrated by peer-reviewed publications and extramural funding, as well as formal training in at least two of the following areas: biostatistics, data sciences, computational methods in biodata sciences, knowledge retrieval, or informatics.

 

The successful candidate will be expected to collaborate on cutting-edge research, advancing the development and implementation of AI methodologies in healthcare. Additionally, this faculty member will play a key role in mentoring students and trainees while contributing to the department’s educational mission by developing and teaching one or more courses on generative AI applications in healthcare and medicine. This position offers a unique opportunity to shape the future of AI-driven advances in clinical informatics, decision support, and healthcare analytics through both research and education.

 

Collaborating with faculty across the University, the successful candidate will apply their expertise to advance the university’s strategy and research efforts through collaboration, leadership, and external funding. Rank is commensurate with experience.

Essential Functions

  • The Department has strong ties with world-class biostatistics, bioinformatics, clinical informatics and health IT groups at the University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati Children's Hospital and UC Health. This environment provides rich collaborative opportunities in data and implementation science with a focus on comparative effectiveness, patient-centered outcome research, performance improvement, decision support, translational medicine, and biomedical informatics.
  • Develop and maintain an externally funded research program.
  • Apply AI expertise in team science projects.
  • Develop and teach one or more courses on generative AI applications in healthcare and medicine.
  • Advise graduate students, research associates and faculty.

Minimum Requirements

  • PhD degree with formal training in at least two of the following areas: biostatistics, data sciences, computational methods, knowledge retrieval, or informatics.
  • Strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Candidates at Associate Professor level should have a strong record of extramural funding.

Required Experience

  • Successful record of research funding for Associate or Professor rank.
  • Strong record of publications.
  • Experience in mentoring research faculty and trainees.
