Cloud Engineer Manager
Position Overview
The Executive Office of Education's Information Technology Group (EOE IT) strives to connect and empower communities of learners, from birth to college to the workforce, by building and supporting innovative systems that facilitate positive outcomes for all. We are a diverse team of professionals dedicated to ensuring that the Commonwealth of Massachusetts remains the national leader in education.
As a member of the EOE IT Management Team, the Cloud Engineer Manager plays a crucial role in the design, deployment, and maintenance of EOE's cloud infrastructure. This position will collaborate with software developers, DevOps engineers, and other stakeholders to ensure the cloud systems are efficient, cost-effective, and aligned with business needs. Major responsibilities include management and supervision of Cloud and Systems Engineers as well as the Release Management team, managing cloud resources, implementing automation, ensuring security best practices, and optimizing performance for a seamless user experience.
The Cloud Engineer Manager reports directly to the Chief Applications Officer and directly manages six staff members as well as direction and guidance to others across the enterprise.
Key Responsibilities
- Security Best Practices: Implement cloud security best practices, including access control, encryption, and compliance with relevant standards
- Cloud Infrastructure Management: Design, deploy, and manage cloud environments using AWS
- Documentation & Training: Create and maintain documentation for cloud architecture, processes, and best practices. Provide support and training to teams on cloud usage and tools.
- Performance Monitoring: Monitor cloud infrastructure for performance, reliability, and availability. Utilize cloud-native monitoring and logging tools (e.g., CloudWatch, Stackdriver) to troubleshoot and optimize systems
- Collaboration: Work closely with development teams to provide the necessary cloud infrastructure for applications, ensuring scalability, high availability, and performance
- Communication: Communicate progress, risks, and roadblocks to stakeholders and senior leadership effectively.

Preferred Qualifications
- At least six years working with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud).
- Strong knowledge of cloud architecture, infrastructure-as-code (IAC), and cloud-native services.
- Proficiency with scripting languages such as Python, Bash, or PowerShell.
- Experience with containerization (e.g., Docker) and orchestration tools (e.g., Kubernetes).
- Cloud certifications (e.g., AWS Certified Solutions Architect, Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect, Google Professional Cloud Architect).
- Experience with serverless architectures and cloud-native technologies (e.g., AWS Lambda, Azure Functions).
- Familiarity with monitoring tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, or Datadog.
- Experience with cloud-based machine learning or big data platforms.
- Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
- Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices.
- Experience with cloud security principles, including identity and access management (IAM), firewalls, and encryption.
- Knowledge of databases, storage systems, and networking in a cloud environment.
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to troubleshoot complex cloud-related issues.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, working effectively with both technical and non-technical teams.
Qualifications
MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:
Applicants must have at least (A) six (6) years of full-time or, equivalent part-time, professional, administrative, supervisory, or managerial experience in business administration, business management, public administration, public management, clinical administration or clinical management of which (B) at least two (2) years must have been in a project management, supervisory or managerial capacity or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and substitutions below.
Substitutions:
I. A certificate in a relevant or related field may be substituted for one (1) year of the required (A) experience.
II. A Bachelor's degree in a related field may be substituted for two (2) years of the required (A) experience.
III. A Graduate degree in a related field may be substituted for three (3) years of the required (A) experience.
IV. A Doctorate degree in a related field may be substituted for four (4) years of the required (A) experience.
