As part of the Business Banking Technology team we ensure that CommBank has a world-class engineering capability and is at the forefront of technology, using innovative and emerging technology to help our customer and support our Group Strategy.

In this role

As an established Principal Engineer within Business Banking Gen AI team, you will be working alongside CommBank’s global engineering community to use AI assisted tools and capabilities to build business banking functionality.

With your Product Engineer mindset, you are building features that are data-driven and customer-centric, fostering that culture within the Group. Here, you will be working with CommBank’s top engineers and AI experts to drive training, culture and experimentation so that all our engineers are making the best use of the emerging AI technologies that make them happier and more productive.

Key responsibilities also include but not limited to:

• Constantly solving the largest and most complex challenges in the team, from technical design to production

• Translating requirements into solid engineering deliverables whilst delegating work to squad members

• Rapidly experimenting with emerging AI assisted engineering tools, and partnering effectively with engineering squads across the Group to support real-world testing and analysis

• Delivering key solutions that are used by other teams and products.

• Consistently defining architectural standards whilst tackling complex architecture issues

• Actively contributing to the code delivery through leading code reviews & documentation, direct contribution and fixing complex bugs

• Coaching and mentoring junior members in the team hiring great engineers and developing their career

We are interested in hearing from people who have:

• Demonstrable knowledge and experience of AI/ML Engineering and their application in accelerating the product development lifecycle

• A proven track record of leading and delivering large-scale, complex engineering initiatives

• Commercial or side project experience in one or more of the following technologies or related technologies: Anthropic Claude, Llama, LiteLLM, Cursor, windsurf / Codeium, VO Vercel, Continue, Aider, Cline, Langchain, Langgraph, Hugging Face

• Deep knowledge of architectural patterns, cloud-native solutions on AWS & Azure, microservices architecture, solutions integration and containerisation

• Exceptional strategic thinking and ability to define long-term technical direction for teams and organisations

• Strong mentoring and leadership skills, with a passion for upskilling engineers and fostering a culture of innovation

• The ability to influence cross-functional teams, articulate trade-offs, and align technical decisions with business objectives

• Demonstrated ability to evaluate emerging AI tools and integrate them into engineering workflows

• Proficiency in agile development methodologies and iterative experimentation from idea to prototype to pilot to product

• Expertise in full cycle engineering using modern DevSecOps practices, IaC , AWS Sagemaker, AWS Bedrock and CI/CD tools

• Strong skills in working with large structured, unstructured and semi-structured datasets
