Senior Software Engineer, UI

 

Posit is seeking a Senior Software Engineer with at least 5 years of experience who is interested in focusing on UI solutions to package management problems for data scientists. In this position, you will lead the UI work, with occasional backend development, on the team for one of Posit’s core products.

Posit Package Manager provides a secure, reliable, and scalable way to distribute and manage R and Python packages across an organization. Built-in vulnerability scanning and management bolsters security and compliance efforts. It can provide an air-gapped source of CRAN, PyPI, and other packages for high-security environments. We are striving to develop the best multilingual package manager for data scientists. We also provide an important free tool to the data science community through Posit Public Package Manager.

You’ll primarily work with TypeScript, Vue, and Golang. Our technology stack also includes PostgreSQL/SQLite, Docker, Kubernetes, Python, R, GitHub, and Amazon Web Services. We don’t expect you to be an expert in all of these technologies and are happy to provide guidance, but significant web development experience with a UI focus is a must.

Things you’ll own:

• Working closely with product management, UX designers, and customers to get feedback on upcoming UI work
• Taking a feature from development to release and owning ongoing technical decisions
• Advocating for the right UI and UX updates for our customers and internal needs
• Ensuring continued product quality through thoughtful design and test automation

Things you’ll help with:

• Deciding what the team should and shouldn’t work on, reviewing our backlog, and understanding in depth what we need to do
• Suggesting process improvements and reinforcing best development practices

Things you’ll teach the team:

• Sharing your expert knowledge in the best UI practices and TypeScript choices
• Your knowledge of accessibility and best practices for building accessible web applications
• Whatever other development knowledge you have, whether it’s from working with design systems, component architecture, or tuning performance. We’re a team that is constantly learning from each other 

Things you’ll learn:

• The Posit products and how data scientists are using them today- we do not expect people to have a data science background
• How to develop a product that is both distributed on-premise for customers and cloud-hosted by our team
• Any languages and technologies we use that you don’t already know

What to Expect:

Within one month, you will…

• Get to know everyone on the team and become familiar with our current development strategies
• Follow our onboarding guide and suggest improvements
• Work on your first feature request and open a handful of pull requests for review

Within three months, you will…

• See your code changes reflected in our current product version
• Participate in feature planning and provide feedback
• Feel comfortable with the repository layout and begin understanding how things fit together

Within six months, you will...

• Add your name to our list of ownership areas and learn more about these topics
• Understand our customers' needs from escalations, advocating for them during refinement
• Teach the team lessons from your previous experiences
• Begin leading more of the UI development and help define best practices

Within a year, you will…

• Understand how the commercial products work together to create a great data science platform
• Plan a feature and kick off the development
• Point to parts of the product that you have significantly contributed to

This hiring range reflects base salary and assumes that the job will be performed in the United States.
