OUR ROLE

TOMRA’s sensor-based solutions play a key role in optimizing resource productivity, particularly in the fields of waste management and recycling, where sensor-based technology can be used to increase precision and streamline processes.

To achieve the ambitious aim of a circular economy, it is necessary to employ state-of-the-art approaches that push boundaries, and TOMRA’s reverse vending and waste sorting solutions help to achieve this by recovering materials and providing valuable insight into the composition of these materials.

The result is a greater understanding of where efficiencies can be made to minimize costs and waste, and better utilize resources within a closed loop – further mitigating the impact of CO2 and other emissions and inefficiencies.

Job Description

The Deep Learning Team builds the tooling to create deep learning models for TOMRA’s sensor-based sorting and analysis systems. This includes data organization and processing, as well as tools to train and deploy deep learning models, screening scientific deep learning improvements, and realization of improvements for industrial sorting systems. Other internal teams will use these tools to create deep learning models to solve real-world sorting problems.

We are looking for a working student to support the Deep Learning Team in the field of Data Science with tasks including:

• Testing, benchmarking, and reporting the latest model-centric and data-centric deep learning advancements on our use-cases
• Development, optimization, and verification of our data, training, and deployment pipelines

This role offers hands-on experience in cutting-edge deep learning applications and an opportunity to contribute to innovative industrial AI solutions.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Master’s student in Computer Science, Data Science, or a related field
• Strong programming skills in Python with a solid foundation in software development
• Good knowledge of vision-based deep learning, including experience with frameworks like PyTorch
• Proven track record of personal projects, GitHub repositories, certifications, or other deep learning-related work
• Basic knowledge of containerization, especially Docker
• Familiarity with version control tools (Git, GitHub, or GitLab)
• Self-motivated, disciplined, and strong problem-solving skills
• Effective communication skills for collaboration and reporting
• You can join us in our office in Mülheim-Kärlich - this is not a full remote position
