General Notes

This is a part-time benefits eligible position (20 hours per week) or a full-time position (40 hours per week).

Purpose

Provide technical support for the High-Resolution X-ray Computed Tomography Facility at The University of Texas at Austin (UTCT).

Responsibilities

  • Manage and Maintain Servers:  Planning, setup, and maintenance of CT lab’s onsite Windows Servers and connections to Campus Active Directory.  Includes hardware, software, and firmware updating; floating software license server maintenance; user account creation and management; setting security policy, firewalls, and intrusion detection; raid arrays for bulk data storage; and periodic security audits. 

  • Manage and Maintain Workstations, including hardware and software maintenance of IP lab, conference room, Digital Methods Classroom, staff desktops and laptops.  Includes license management; security controls; AD integration; remote access; user accounts. Setup and maintenance of projection systems, and video conference equipment.  Setup and maintenance of lab printers, document scanners, and digital camera equipment.  Also includes user training and instruction, and pre-purchase advising about GPU’s and workstations for CT lab clients. 

  • Manage and Maintain Web/Cloud Resources: setup and maintenance of UT Datacenter Virtual machines as necessary, including for CT lab website and Digimorph.org website.  Administration and daily use of cloud-based bulk storage and data distribution. 

  • Manage and Maintain Networking: design, setup, and maintenance of network infrastructure; security controls; running cables and telecom-room operation; switches, routers, and NICs; IP address allocation and database management, DNS setup and maintenance. 

  • Assist the Maintenance of X-ray Equipment [full-time only]:  Hardware and software maintenance of data acquisition and reconstruction systems, including security controls, remote access, and local raid arrays.   Diagnostics and maintenance of NSI X-ray generators and associated racks of electronics equipment.  Initiate daily conditioning of all X-ray sources.   

  • Manage and Maintain Backups and Archiving: Includes hardware and software maintenance of local Rapid-Recovery backup system and associated raid arrays.  Setup and maintenance of offsite data backups, such as TACC and UTBOX and external hard drive backups of large Raw-data archives.  Utilizing on-line repositories, such as the Texas Data Repository, for long-term data and metadata preservation and making select CT data available for public downloading.  

Required Qualifications

Comprehensive knowledge of system administration, exhibited by appropriate training and two or more years professional experience with MS Windows installation and administration. Knowledge and experience installing and maintaining web servers and associated software (Apache). Familiarity with concepts such as RAID, LPAR, hardware diagnostics, backups, replication, failure-recovery procedures. Knowledge and experience managing LANs and familiarity with graphics- and memory-intensive computing. Ability to independently identify, architect and implement solutions to bring lab servers and workstations up-to-date and to ensure they are easily sustainable. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Strong interpersonal skills. Strong organizational skills with attention to detail. Demonstrated ability to work effectively, both independently and collaboratively, in a team-oriented environment.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrated expertise and experience with: enterprise client system administration and application deployment solutions (e.g. Active Directory, MS GPO, SCCM, Absolute Manage); system imaging and migration solutions (e.g. WDS, USMT). Experience administering Mac OSX and Linux operating systems. Programming experience, including: shell scripting, Bash, Windows, PowerShell, Perl, Python, C/C++, IDL, Java, PHP, HTML. Understanding of database systems, SQL and JBoss. Familiarity with use of technical software used by lab operations (IDL, Avizo, VG Studio Max, ImageJ, etc.). Experience working with or around X-ray scanning equipment and/or in a scientific lab environment. Skilled at training technical staff.

Salary

$70,000 + depending on qualifications
