The US base salary range for this full-time position is $243,750-$406,250 plus bonus eligibility and other elements of our total rewards package.  The range represents the amount bnsf | tech reasonably expects to pay for the position based on the level, scope, and responsibilities of the role.  Individual compensation and level of position offered is determined by the hiring location and additional factors including but not limited to job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. In addition to base pay, BNSF offers a comprehensive benefits package.

As a Sr Staff PaaS Engineer, you will: 

  • Lead the creation and maintenance of scalable PaaS systems. 

  • Architect and prototype new PaaS landscapes to meet evolving business and technical requirements. 

  • Drive efforts to transition towards open-source equivalents. 

  • Develop in-house solutions where necessary. 

  • Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior engineers. 

  • Elevate the quality of engineering practices through design sessions and code reviews. 

  • Ensure the performance, quality, and responsiveness of applications. 

  • Identify and address bottlenecks and bugs, devising solutions to mitigate these issues. 

  • Implement and manage rigorous testing processes. 

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define, design, and ship new features. 

  • Develop and maintain comprehensive documentation for system configurations, processes, and procedures. 

  • Stay up to date with emerging technologies and industry trends. 

  • Engage in cross-functional collaboration throughout the software lifecycle to solve complex problems. 

  • Drive innovation and continuous improvement within engineering teams. 

 

Basic Qualifications: 

  • I am CURRENTLY authorized to work in the US.  

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent experience. 

  • 12+ years of experience in data and software engineering, with a proven track record of building and leveraging PaaS systems in a highly performant manner. 

  • In Depth knowledge of programming languages Java, Python, Terraform 

  • Deep understanding of technologies such as SQL, NoSQL, SQL Server,  

  • Hands on and System design experience with content management and streaming platform such as Cassandra, Kafka, IBM MQ, AMQ, Informatica, SharePoint, FileNet, OpenText. 

  • Mastery in 4 or more technologies such as Db2 LUW, Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, MarkLogic, DSE Cassandra, Kafka, IBM MQ, AMQ, Informatica, SharePoint, FileNet, OpenText. 

  • Mastery in 4 or more open-source data platforms such as PostgreSQL, Cassandra, MySQL, MariaDB, MongoDB, Alfresco, Nuxeo, Apache NiFi, Apache Airflow, and RabbitMQ. 

  • Experience in deploying and managing applications in cloud environments leveraging AWS native platforms; Aurora, DynamoDB, DocumentDB, Keyspaces, Timestream, RDS, Glue, and Message Services. 

  • Proficiency in deploying and maintaining highly available, continuously available, and clustered architectures to meet varying availability requirements. 

  • In-depth knowledge of data structures and algorithms, with practical experience in optimizing performance and scalability. 

  • Strong problem-solving ability with a background in debugging, analyzing, and resolving performance bottlenecks in complex applications. 

  • Knowledge of developer tooling across the SDLC, including task management, source code management, building, deployment, and operations. 

  • Experience with testing methodologies, ensuring the reliability and quality of applications through rigorous testing practices. 

  • Proficiency in event-driven and microservices architecture patterns, demonstrating the ability to design and implement these systems. 

  • Ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly and effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. 

  • Experience with DevOps practices and tools, including CI/CD pipelines, containerization (Docker, Kubernetes), and IaC (Terraform, Ansible). 

  • Architect and optimize data pipelines to facilitate seamless integration with AI and ML models. Implement data preprocessing, transformation, and storage solutions to ensure high-quality, accessible datasets.  

  • Collaborate with data scientists to understand model requirements and enhance data infrastructure accordingly. 

  • Implement and manage robust security protocols, including at-rest and in-flight encryption, authentication, and authorization mechanisms.  

  • Conduct regular security audits and vulnerability assessments to ensure adherence to industry standards and regulatory requirements.  

  • Develop and enforce policies for data protection, access control, and incident response. 

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field 

  • Experience in PaaS environments, with a focus on building scalable and efficient systems. 

  • Proven ability to leverage open-source database and data integration tools effectively. 

  • Experience with monitoring and logging tools, such as Prometheus, Grafana, ELK stack, and Splunk, to ensure application performance and reliability. 

  • Demonstrated leadership in driving innovation and continuous improvement within engineering teams.
