At Serve Robotics, we’re reimagining how things move in cities. Our personable sidewalk robot is our vision for the future. It’s designed to take deliveries away from congested streets, make deliveries available to more people, and benefit local businesses.

The Serve fleet has been delighting merchants, customers, and pedestrians along the way in Los Angeles while doing commercial deliveries. We’re looking for talented individuals who will grow robotic deliveries from surprising novelty to efficient ubiquity.

Who We Are

We are tech industry veterans in software, hardware, and design who are pooling our skills to build the future we want to live in. We are solving real-world problems leveraging robotics, machine learning and computer vision, among other disciplines, with a mindful eye towards the end-to-end user experience. Our team is agile, diverse, and driven. We believe that the best way to solve complicated dynamic problems is collaboratively and respectfully.

Role Overview

As a Lead Systems Safety Engineer, you are responsible for ensuring that our robot is safe, from design and implementation to test and validation. You will own safety case development, requirements generation, architecture development, and ultimately verification & validation for an autonomous last-mile delivery robot. You will work across many teams and disciplines to ensure the safety of a complex robotic system by breaking high-level safety cases into actionable strategies and methods for design, development, and test throughout the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Lead interdisciplinary teams to analyze product features, define corresponding safe behaviors, and demonstrate those behaviors are exhibited as intended

  • Define verifiable safety requirements and quantitative safety metrics based on risk analysis that can be measured at scale with data and simulation for both the autonomy software and the hardware platform

  • Lead cross-functional teams to generate innovative safety concepts, and ensure safety architecture and requirements are aligned across the organization

  • Define and implement creative safety architecture and validation solutions for a drive stack that incorporates machine learning based solutions

  • Drive safety analysis with teams across multiple domains, including hardware, software, and autonomy teams

  • Promote a culture of safety within the organization and provide training and guidance on safety best practices

Qualifications

  • B.S. in Mechanical, Electrical, Software or equivalent engineering field

  • 8+ years of experience in the design and test of complex electromechanical and/or robotic systems

  • Experience with systems engineering fundamentals, particularly safety engineering methodologies such as HARA, safety concept and requirements development, and safety verification & validation

  • Experience with test scripting and data analysis languages (e.g. Python and SQL)

  • Experience in data analysis of test results including probability and statistical analysis techniques

  • Hands-on approach to the design and test of safety-critical electromechanical systems

  • Fundamental knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and software engineering

  • Experience with safety analysis methodologies (HAZOP, FMEA, FTA, DFA) and safety standards (ISO 26262, ISO/PAS 8800, etc.)

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to guide teams on safety concepts and develop clear safety argumentation

What Makes You Standout

  • M.S., or Ph.D in Mechanical, Electrical, Software or equivalent engineering field

  • Experience in one or more of the following industries: automotive, medical, aerospace, robotics

  • Experience in autonomous systems and/or mobile robotics

  • Experience working in Unix/Linux environments
