Job Title: Principal Data Architect

Overview:

Covetrus is a global animal-health technology and services company dedicated to empowering veterinary practice partners to drive improved health and financial outcomes. We’re bringing together products, services, and technology into a single platform that connects our customers to the solutions and insights they need to work best. Our passion for the well-being of animals and those who care for them drives us to advance the world of veterinary medicine. We are seeking a Principal Data Architect to lead the design, implementation, and evolution of our cloud-based data platform with a strong focus on data modeling, integration, and scalability.

This role blends strategic architecture with hands-on execution, enabling real-time, secure data access across internal systems and external client platforms. You’ll drive the foundation for advanced analytics, operational dashboards, and intelligent veterinary services using Snowflake, dbt, Kafka/Confluent, Debezium, Atlas MongoDB, Python, and Runbook Automation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the design and implementation of scalable, extensible data models that support core veterinary business domains including appointments, EMRs, inventory, billing, customer engagement, and pet health tracking.
  • Develop and maintain enterprise data models and dimensional models in Snowflake and dbt, ensuring performance, reusability, and semantic clarity.
  • Architect and manage data pipelines using Kafka (Confluent) and Debezium for real-time ingestion and change data capture (CDC) from clinic systems and partner platforms.
  • Integrate structured and semi-structured data from MongoDB Atlas into Snowflake and other analytical stores while applying best practices for modeling JSON document structures.
  • Build and operationalize data workflows using Python and Runbook Automation frameworks to support continuous, reliable data movement across systems.
  • Establish and enforce data modeling standards, naming conventions, and documentation practices to ensure consistency across the platform.
  • Collaborate with product managers, software engineers, BI teams, and veterinary domain experts to translate business concepts into normalized and analytical data structures.
  • Maintain architecture diagrams, lineage maps, and design documentation in Confluence to support transparency and cross-team understanding.
  • Mentor and coach engineers on best practices in data modeling, integration, and performance optimization.

Required Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of experience in data architecture and data engineering, with demonstrated expertise in conceptual, logical, and physical data modeling.
  • Mastery of modern data warehousing tools including Snowflake, dbt, and SQL.
  • Proven experience designing data models for transactional, operational, and analytical systems.
  • Proficient in Kafka and Confluent, including designing and consuming real-time streaming pipelines.
  • Hands-on experience with Debezium for CDC across relational databases.
  • Strong background in integrating data from MongoDB Atlas and modeling semi-structured documents.
  • Proficiency in Python for data engineering and workflow automation.
  • Skilled in documenting and communicating data structures using tools like Confluence and ER modeling platforms.
  • Deep understanding of data governance, data quality, and secure handling of sensitive veterinary and customer data.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Background in healthcare or veterinary systems, including EMRs or practice management systems.
  • Knowledge of containerization (Docker/Kubernetes) for data services deployment.
  • Exposure to modern data architecture frameworks like Data Vault or Data Mesh is a plus.

Why Join Us:

  • Drive innovation in animal healthcare through clean, accessible, and intelligently structured data.
  • Work with a passionate, collaborative team in a remote-friendly and flexible environment.
  • Leverage a modern data stack and contribute directly to real-world improvements in veterinary care and operations.
