The Associate Ops Engineer is part of the Daily Operations team responsible for providing Safe and compliant aircraft performance, weight and balance, and aircraft communication solutions to Southwest. This team interacts with various workgroups who support aircraft operations, including Flight Ops, Dispatch, and Tech Ops. This role supports commercial transformation projects like new market analysis, fuel savings initiatives, and operational efficiency enhancements. The Associate Ops Engineer is innovative and enjoys working in a dynamic environment to drive the future of Southwest.

Responsibilities

• Participate in defining the takeoff, en route, and landing aircraft performance and weight and balance data as required by FAR Part 25 and 121
• Participate in analyzing aircraft performance to support the safe and efficient operation of the airline and convey that information through performance and weight and balance systems, Electronic Flight Bag, Dispatch flight planning system, Flight Operations Manual, Flight Reference Manual, and other Flight Operations and Network Operations Control publications
• Participate in the validation and audit support for aircraft performance systems and supporting data, including the performance and weight and balance systems, Dispatch flight planning system, and navigational data
• Participate in the support and training, as required, of other groups within the Company, including Flight Operations, Dispatch, Network Planning, Technical Operations, Finance, Supply Chain Management, General Counsel, and Ground Operations in regard to aircraft performance capability and regulation
• Provide support and representation to external groups, including airport authorities, manufacturers, vendors, regulators, and consultants
• Assist in the development and integration of new technologies into Operations
• Assist in the development and maintenance of software code for Operations Engineering to support the operations working groups
• Participate in the transition of current operations engineering programming standards to future standards based on the best operational and business practices available
• Understand and apply applicable regulations, manufacturer requirements and recommendations, Company policies and industry standards related to aircraft performance and operations engineering

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledge of circuit boards, processors, chips, electronic equipment, and computer hardware and software, including applications and programming
• Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology, including applying principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment to the design and production of various goods and services
• Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, aerodynamics, and their applications
• Skilled in collecting, organizing, visualizing, and assimilating data, including turning raw data into meaningful information using data-oriented programming languages and visualization software
• Skilled in identifying problems and reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions
• Skilled in using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems
• Ability to choose the right mathematical methods or formulas to solve a problem
• Ability to read documents, follow instructions, learn, and understand office procedures and various contracts
• Ability to work with others as part of a Team and work under stressful situations
• Ability to work extended hours based on operational needs

Education

• Required: High School Diploma or GED

Experience

• Entry-level experience; developing skills and knowledge in:
  • Airline or manufacturer experience in aerodynamics and/or aircraft performance engineering and programming experience
  • Boeing aircraft performance tools and methods
  • Aircraft certification, flight operations, flight dispatch, and aircraft weight and balance
• Preferred: Experience with Python, SQL, Data analytics and visualization, and cloud computing

Physical Abilities

• Ability to perform work duties from [limited space workstation/desk/office area] for extended periods of time
• Ability to communicate and interact with others in the English language to meet the demands of the job
• Ability to use a computer and other office productivity tools with sufficient speed and accuracy to meet the demands of the job

Other Qualifications

• Must maintain a well-groomed appearance per Company appearance standards as described in established guidelines
• Must be a U.S. citizen or have authorization to work in the United States as defined by the Immigration Reform Act of 1986
• Must be at least 18 years of age
• Must be able to comply with Company attendance standards as described in established guidelines

Pay & Benefits:

Competitive market salary from $78,850 per year to $87,600 per year* depending on qualifications and experience. For eligible Leadership and individual contributor roles, additional bonus opportunities are available and awarded at the discretion of the company.
