The job

Within the research unit Smart Models/Monitoring we are looking for a data manager/scientific programmer (f/m/x) to support the departments CER, RS and CHS in their day-to-day scientific activities related to the handling of large spatio-temporal datasets from observations, remote sensing and model simulations. The position is originally for 3 years but can be extended.

Place of work

Leipzig, Mobile working possible up to 3 days/week.

Working time

100% (39 hours/week)

The job position is available for full-time or part-time employment.

Contract limitations

limited contract / 36 months

Salary

Remuneration according to the TVöD public-sector up to pay grade 13 including attractive public-sector social security benefits.

The job

Within the research unit Smart Models/Monitoring we are looking for a data manager/scientific programmer (f/m/x) to support the departments CER, RS and CHS in their day-to-day scientific activities related to the handling of large spatio-temporal datasets from observations, remote sensing and model simulations. The position is originally for 3 years but can be extended.

Your tasks

  • Support the departments CER, RS, and CHS by building a flexible data archive and management system for spatio-temporal datasets such as remotely sensed data, climate and impact model simultations, reanalysis and gridded observation-based data
  • Downloading, regridding, reprojecting and regularly updating relevant datasets
  • Possible gap filling of datasets
  • Interactive visualization of metadata and available datasets for easy access for researchers

Your profile

  • MSc or PhD in Earth system science, remote sensing, environmental modelling or related fields
  • Excellent data handling skills with large spatiotemporal data 
  • Experience with high performance computing (HPC) 
  • Excellent programming skills (e.g. Python, R, Julia, bash, cdo,…) 
  • Experience with different data formats such as netcdf, geotiff, hdf, zarr 
  • Open minded, pro-active 
  • Experience with a scientific work environment
