What you will do – Essential Responsibilities

Data Engineers on the Enterprise Data Lake team at CarMax are responsible for providing reliable and business-critical data for analytics and machine learning use cases. This role involves close collaboration with Data Scientists, Data Analysts, and source system owners to design, build, and maintain data pipelines. Responsibilities include,

  • Designing and developing systems for ingesting streaming and batch data using technologies such as Databricks and Azure ML.

  • Creating new data pipelines to ingest and transform data

  • Classifying data in order to apply security policies in accordance with Carmax standards

  • Ensure data quality is part of the design and checks are implemented to maintain data quality

  • Drive root cause analysis of production issues.

  • Assists in integrating diverse datasets and understanding data consumption patterns.

  • Ensures that the data consumers use the data provisioned to them responsibly through data governance and compliance initiatives.

Purpose of the role

The newly hired data engineer will be the key contributor in organizing siloed data from across the enterprise into a comprehensive data set.  This dataset will either be used in operational use cases to help enhance our customer experience and operational excellence and to fuel analytical and data science capabilities.  

Qualifications and Requirements

Basic Qualifications

  • 2+ years’ software engineering or data engineering experience in an enterprise-level environment

  • 2+ years’ experience building enterprise-level solutions with Microsoft Azure or equivalent cloud technologies

  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, SQL, or Scala.

  • Experience with data engineering tools and technologies such as Databricks, Azure ML, and event stream processing.

  • Experience with cloud ETL tools such as Azure Data Factory

  • Experience with serverless solutions such as Azure Functions

  • Familiarity with Apache Spark & distributed compute engines

  • Understanding of data warehousing concepts and data modeling.

  • Excellent communication skills, adapting to various audience types

  • Experience on a fast-paced, highly collaborative agile team within a Product-oriented organization

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related Technology field or equivalent experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in computer science, Engineering, or a related field.

  • Experience with technologies such as Apache Spark, Snowflake, or Kafka.

  • Familiarity with containerization and orchestration tools like Docker, Kubernetes

  • Knowledge of data governance and data security best practices.

  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices

Work Location and Arrangement: This role will be based out of one of the following locations and have a Hybrid work arrangement: 
•    Dallas, TX Technology Hub 
•    Richmond, VA Technology Innovation Center
