The Intersectional Benchmarking Unit of Doctors Without Borders (Médecins Sans Frontières/MSF) is seeking a Data Engineer to join its team for 5 months.

About the Role

This role plays a key part in advancing MSF’s efforts to enhance quality, consistency, and coherence across benchmarking services for the wider MSF movement. It supports the strategic direction of the Benchmarking Unit by strengthening how we securely and efficiently handle large volumes of confidential data—transforming them for optimal use in a range of applications.

The Data Engineer will be primarily responsible for developing and maintaining a fully functional data warehouse to store and manage critical data used in Benchmarking activities. This includes:

  • Cleaning and transforming historical data into structured tables
  • Implementing ETL (extracting, transforming and loading) pipelines
  • Designing and executing physical schemas in SQL (within an Azure environment)
  • Ensuring secure and effective data storage solutions

As part of a small, dynamic team, the position also includes varied tasks such as

  • Conducting stakeholder interviews to support quality improvement
  • Maintaining and enhancing existing analytical tools
  • Contributing to the development of new tools
  • Managing user access

This is an excellent opportunity to apply and further develop a broad range of data skills in a purpose-driven environment.

Candidate Profile

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science/Engineering, Business Analytics, or a related field
  • Experience: At least 3 years in a data-focused role (e.g. Data Engineer, Data Architect, Back-End Developer, Data Manager), with strong experience in data models, database schemas, and relational databases
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in SQL (preferably in Azure), Microsoft Excel, and experience with ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes and secure data storage practices
  • Languages: Proficient in spoken and written English (B2 level or higher); additional languages such as French, Spanish, Russian, Portuguese, or Arabic are an asset
  • Competencies: Skilled in data wrangling, server-side data management, and familiar with data engineering best practices

What We Offer

  • A dynamic and international working environment
  • Work Location: Oslo or other MSF partner sections (depending on the candidate’s location, hosting costs and regulations). The applicable labour law and hosting policy will follow that of the respective MSF section or country
  • Salary: Aligned with MSF Hay Grade 15, corresponding to 50,477–55,804 NOK/month if based in Norway, or according to the salary policy of the respective MSF partner section if based elsewhere
  • 100% contract for fixed-term 5 months (August 2025 - January 2026)

At MSF, we value diversity and seek to have an inclusive and accessible work environment. We encourage all individuals who have the required qualifications to apply, independently of their ethnic, national or cultural background, age, gender, sexual orientation, religious belief, disabilities, or other aspects of their identity.
