Join The Hartford as we lead the AI transformation in our industry! We are seeking a highly skilled leader, Vice President (VP) of AI and Data Engineering, to shape the future of The Hartford. The ideal candidate has experience in developing scalable data environments, launching data products, enabling AI/ML solutions, and shaping data analytics strategies. The VP will lead the development and implementation of advanced AI and data engineering solutions to drive business transformation and enhance customer experiences.
This role requires strategic thinking, expertise in data engineering practices, knowledge of AI technologies, and the ability to lead cross-functional teams. The candidate should be versed in real-time data streaming, agentic frameworks, Data APIs, vector stores, and RAG architectures, and have a track record of enabling self-serve analytics and AI use cases.
The VP will drive a data-driven culture and the adoption of AI technologies to enhance our data platform and deliver value to our members. They will lead transformational change and guide innovative technologies/products for better business outcomes through automation and AI.
This role can have a Hybrid or Remote work arrangement. Candidates who live near Hartford, Ct; Charlotte, NC; Chicago, IL; Columbus OH will have the expectation of working hybrid. Candidates who do not live near an office will have a remote work arrangement, with the expectation of travel once a month on average. Must be eligible to work in the US without company sponsorship.
Key Responsibilities- Vision & Strategy: Evangelize and execute the vision and strategy for the Data Products & AI solutioning and drive an interactive plan to enable End to End business transformations, partnering with business, technology and other stakeholders.
- Execute on the enterprise data strategy that supports structured, unstructured data mining, real-time data streaming, vector and graph databases, and AI-powered applications.
- Execution & Delivery: Define the target state for customer domain data that includes a Customer 360 solution integrated with digital data, data mastering (MDM) capabilities that improve accuracy and consistency, and highly scalable data pipelines that support agentic solutions for Contact Center agents.
- Stay up to date on emerging AI trends, attending conferences, and driving thought leadership to enhance organizational impact and visibility.
- Drive efficiency and Productivity: Identify and champion developer productivity opportunities across the end-to-end data management lifecycle. This includes researching and implementing innovative solutions such as AI-driven auto-generation of ETL pipelines, advanced DevOps practices for data and automated data quality frameworks.
- Executive Leadership: Actively participate in senior leadership team, providing strategic thought leadership on data, AI, and technology trends, and acting as a change agent at the senior level of the organization
- Data Governance & Quality: Define and implement robust data management frameworks to ensure successful adoption of Enterprise Data Governance and Data Quality practices that enable data consumers to quickly and effectively find, access, interpret, and utilize data.
- Team Leadership: Provide expert-level coaching, mentorship, and feedback to the leadership of the data team, fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement. Drive transformational change within the organization
- Personalization & Engagement: Drive strategy to ensure our platform offers personalized user experiences that meet the highest quality standards, leveraging AI and machine learning to maximize customer engagement and lifetime value
Qualifications
- 15+ years in data engineering, designing, and developing large-scale data ecosystems.
- A minimum of 5 years of experience in progressively responsible leadership roles (through to the senior management level), managing medium to large-sized teams and cross-functional initiatives
- Proven experience in building and launching successful data products from ideation to market
- Meaningful experience working with executive level leadership, influencing strategic decision-making, and driving organizational change
- Strong business acumen, with the ability to translate data insights and AI/ML models into tangible business value
- Strong collaboration, communication, and interpersonal skills, with experience building positive working relationships with senior leaders across the business
- Track record of success managing and delivering complex data projects in an agile environment
- Results-driven and forward-thinking, with the ability to influence and drive change across the organization
- Excellent presentation and storytelling skills to communicate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences
Technical skills:
- Mastery in data engineering and architecture, including data warehouse, integration, data lake, data domains, data products, BI, and cloud technologies.
- Experience integrating ML solutions with cloud platforms like AWS SageMaker and GCP Vertex AI.
- Technical expertise in LLMs, Generative AI platforms, prompt engineering, RAG architecture, vector databases, AI agent development, and enterprise API integration.
- Experience handling model hallucinations and grounding/ranking APIs.
- Proficiency with GCP, Cloud AI, Vertex AI, and Big Query.
- Hands-on experience with building AI agents, preferably in GCP vertex ai platform or AWS/Azure
- Knowledge in hybrid data lake-houses involving multiple cloud vendors.
- Experience with multimodal language modeling.
- Hands-on experience with unstructured data mining and content summarization.
- Experience designing and developing complex data ecosystems leveraging next-generation cloud technology across AWS or GCP Cloud and Snowflake.
- Deep understanding of AI/ML algorithms and techniques, with experience in applying them to real-world business problems
Compensation
The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:
