Summary

The Principal Data Scientist will be ITS’ advanced analytics liaison with business groups, and will have an understanding of machine learning, regression, dimensionality reduction, and classification to provide guidance on best practices and architecture needed to create repeatable, trusted data science. Utilizing their analytical, statistical and programming skills, they will collect, analyze and interpret large data sets in order to develop and recommend data-driven solutions to business challenges for business partners. Projects may include propensity modeling, advanced forecasting, market sizing for new products, product and process optimization, text analytics, digital analytics, development and delivery of data science related training material, and applications of AI to data science. Translating highly technical concepts for non-technical audiences and mentoring team members is a significant job responsibility. The successful candidate will have a passion for discovering solutions hidden in large data sets and working with business partners to improve business outcomes.

What You'll Do

  • Act as project leader on enterprise analytics projects of major scope and importance.
  • Define problems, supervise data collection, apply advanced statistical and mathematical concepts, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Work often requires the analysis of large data sets using complex python, R, and sql in the Dataiku framework.
  • Recommend solutions to new and complex problems, develop innovative strategies, quantify the performance of the business functions and evaluate the potential impact of changes.
  • Gather model requirements, design experiments and analyses, build and deploy predictive models.
  • Proven ability to drive business results with their data-based insights.
  • Comfortable working with a wide range of stakeholders and functional teams.
  • Strong experience using a variety of data mining/data analysis methods.
  • Mastery of a statistical software (Python or R). Data visualization experience is strongly preferred.
  • Experience with Snowflake, SQL Server databases and T-SQL queries.
  • Working knowledge of the following concepts:
    • Data transformations (e.g. log transformation, standardization, normalization)
    • Univariate and Multivariate tests (e.g. t-test, ANOVA, MANOVA, ANCOVA)
    • Statistical modeling (e.g. linear regression, logistic regression, multivariate regression, ARIMA models, classical time series decomposition, mixed models)
    • Clustering (e.g. k-means, hierarchical clustering)
    • Dimensionality reduction (e.g. Principle Components Analysis, Discriminant Analysis, Factor Analysis)
    • Classification (e.g. logistic regression, K-NN, naïve Bayes, decision trees, neural networks)
    • Conjoint Analysis and Discrete Choice Analysis
  • Ability to interpret results and explain impacts to the business for consumption by leadership.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required to convey advanced statistical concepts to all levels of employees. Data visualization skills are required.

  • Master's degree preferred
  • Ability to perform multiple, non-routine assignments concurrently under stress and restricted time frames.
  • Ability to provide accurate, timely and concrete analysis and recommendations to executive management.
  • Ability to plan and to carry out research projects.
  • Ability to present in front of large groups in a composed, clear, and concise, manner, including group training.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to be a recognized advisor in areas of specialty.
  • Ability to get along with all levels of employees within SRP.
  • Ability to represent SRP in industry organizations in areas of expertise.

Preferred:

  • Dataiku core designer, ML Practitioner, and Advanced certifications
  • Python/R certification

Experience

A minimum of 10 years of related experience is required (if no degree, 14 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and related experience totaling 14 years). 

Education

A bachelor’s degree in a related field from an accredited institution is required and a master’s degree in the area of specialty is preferred.

 

Hybrid Workplace

SRP currently offers a hybrid workplace, which allows employees whose jobs can be performed remotely, and who have sufficient technical capability, to telework up to three days per week. Although teleworking is available, all employees must live and work in Arizona.
