Description

The Department of Biology and the Center for Behavioral Neuroscience in the College of Arts and Sciences at American University invites applications for a Postdoctoral Scientist in Residence appointment to begin in January 2015. A highly motivated postdoctoral scholar is needed for externally funded research on the neurobiology of food-seeking behavior in the laboratory of Dr. Mark Laubach. The project will examine functional interactions between the prefrontal cortex, basal ganglia and hypothalamus in food-related decisions and will use behavioral, optogenetic and anatomical tract-tracing methods.

 

Applicants should hold a doctoral degree in Neuroscience or a related field. Compensation will be based on the current NIH salary schedule for postgraduates who have completed no more than one year of postgraduate research. Applicants must have expertise with fluorescence microscopy, imunohistochemistry, stereotaxic surgery, and operant behavioral testing. Additional strengths would include experience with optogenetics, multi-electrode recordings and/or computer-based data analysis (e.g. Matlab, Python). Excellent organizational, written and verbal communication and team skills are crucial.

 

The appointment is a 12-month term position that could be renewed for a second year based on performance and productivity.
