ROLE DESCRIPTION
The role of Data Engineer will be a key role within the STR Data Operations Team, reporting to the Director, Technical Data Operations. The Data Operations team is responsible for data acquisition, data loading, data quality, data processing, data delivery, and data support for hospitality clients. This role will provide focus on enhancing our internal reporting capabilities, data quality, data architecture, data acquisition, data automation and business insights.
This role would be suited to an individual with a background in building SQL queries, Python scripts, and Report Development tools (SSRS, SAP BO, Tableau, Power BI). The candidate must be able to exhibit proficiency in working with large volumes of data, automating data loads, and the ability to understand end user requirements with the goal of building a solution to provide high quality data analysis or end user reporting. Additionally, the candidate must be able to partner with our internal IT team to assist with moving STR’s data ingestion, storage, and consumption into the cloud (AWS) using available standardized tools.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Build technical skills including SQL, Python, and Power BI
- Automate data ingestion, build quality control for data consistency, and catalogue new data sets for data discovery
- Develop SQL procedures, functions, and views
- Support standard business reports
- Data warehousing
- Develop solutions to analyse and address data needs and issues
- Develop solutions to address ad-hoc business needs
- Maintain and develop SSRS reports and reporting environments (dev, test, prod), user subscriptions, and report scheduling
- Helpdesk support for all internal report requests
- Develop in-depth knowledge and understanding of all aspects of the company’s data landscape
- Help migrate existing reporting to new environments during the integration project
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics, Engineering or equivalent experience
- 4+ years programming in SQL with experience in relational schema designs and optimising query performance.
- 2+ years using Python and/or another Data Science based scripting language.
- Demonstrated experience and responsibility with data, processes, and building ETL pipelines.
- Experience with cloud data warehouses such as Snowflake, Azure Data Warehouse, Amazon Redshift, and Google BigQuery.
- Building visualizations using Power BI or Tableau
- Experience in designing ETL/ELT solutions, preferably using tools like SSIS, Alteryx, AWS Glue, Databricks, IBM DataStage
- Solid analytical and technical skills
- Good communications skills both verbally and written; this role will be working closely with business users.
- Experience working in the hospitality industry beneficial
