About Us

At Basis, our purpose is to radically accelerate the clean-energy revolution - starting with smarter, safer, and more efficient homes. We’re focused on improving experiences for people through the application of technology, data, and a deep understanding of human behaviour.

Why? As a society, we need to decarbonise and accelerate the transition to alternative energy sources. Existing solutions are expensive and disparate, with limited functionality.

Basis is fuelled by purpose, real innovation, and ambition. We have a talented team spread across New Zealand, with a creative space by the beach in Takapuna and a Design Lab in Christchurch where our physical products come to life.

Our team is smart, curious, and has some big goals - so if you’re interested in joining a fast-growing startup that is design-led and puts people at its core, then we’d love to hear from you!

The Role

We're looking to supercharge the development of our Data and Digital products, and we’re looking for someone who can build a world-class Data and Digital development team. In this role, you will be managing our existing team of app developers, backend developers, and data engineers who have been working hard to develop our Data and Digital products.

We have ambitious plans for this team to scale up, and we need the HoDDD to shape the Data and Digital identity within Basis into a cohesive, high-performing function aligned with the wider business.

Some of the things that you might be involved in include:

  • Fostering a high-performance culture that delivers key outcomes and ultimately attracts/retains top talent.
  • Nurture collaboration and communication across teams to align efforts and achieve common goals.
  • Ensure that unknowns, issues, and problems are resolved with urgency for the successful implementation of technical solutions.
  • Create an environment where high-quality outputs are coupled with rapid deployment, leveraging test automation and efficient QA.
  • Make strategic decisions related to technical gaps and issues to effectively mitigate risks to the project/program schedule.
  • Coach and mentor your direct reports, both individual contributors and people managers, to enhance their performance and leadership capabilities.
  • Actively promote the professional growth of your team, leveraging 1:1s to provide regular feedback and create effective growth opportunities.

This role will play a crucial part in helping us to deliver our digital offering, so you will be working cross-functionally with many teams in our business, including product, marketing, delivery, design, and engineering. We need someone who has proven experience in building high-performing teams but also who is adept at navigating organisational requirements to help their team deliver successfully.

About You

We think you’ll be a fit for this role if you have the following skills or traits:

  • 10+ years of career experience in engineering / software development environments.
  • 5+ years in leadership roles for app and/or data development teams, and ideally experience leading successful multi-disciplinary teams comprising Mobile and Web Apps, Backend/Cloud, Data Science, and Testing.
  • Hands-on technical experience in one (or more) of: App/Web development (iOS, Android, React); backend/cloud (AWS); data science; QA, testing, and test automation.
  • A continuous improvement mindset, not just for yourself but for your direct reports as well.
  • Comfort being thrown in the deep end and making decisions when the path forward is not clear.
  • Determination and tenacity, and the ability to navigate through roadblocks.
  • Clear, candid, and concise communication skills - both written and verbal, but also an ability to be kind and compassionate when dealing with others.

Some nice to haves include:

  • Experience in electronics development, specifically Data and Digital interfaces to electronics, is a bonus.

Research shows that while men apply for jobs when they meet ~ 60% of the job criteria, women and other marginalised groups tend to apply only when they check every box. So if you think you have what it takes but are not sure you check every box, we still want to hear from you 🙌

Benefits

  • A competitive salary and employee share scheme (ESOP).
  • A hybrid-first culture - work from home or come into the office, it's totally up to you.
  • Unlimited annual leave so that you can take the time that you need to re-energise.
  • Tools of trade, including laptop and headphone allowance.
  • Flexible hours - we focus on effort and outcomes, so adjust your hours around your children, hobbies, or other commitments.
  • A schedule of fun team events throughout the year (ziplining, knife throwing, lawn games, what's next?).
  • Office dogs + steady supply of fresh fruit and snacks in the office.
  • Access to Clearhead, our well-being programme which gives you 5x free sessions with a psychologist per year.
  • A commitment to diversity and inclusion: Pride Committee and partnering with Pride Pledge, DEIB Committee, EEO Policy, and well-being strategy!
  • Parental leave policy that tops up wages to 100% for the primary caregiver for up to 22 weeks and up to 6 weeks for secondary caregivers (conditions apply).
  • The opportunity to learn and develop from some of the best and brightest minds in the industry!
