As a Senior Data Platform Engineer within Moderna’s Data Platform team, you will play a pivotal part in building and scaling mission-critical data infrastructure that empowers our teams across the enterprise.
This role is ideal for an engineer who thrives in technical complexity and has a passion for developing robust systems at scale. You’ll focus on delivering self-service capabilities, secure data sharing models, and metadata governance—all vital for ensuring Moderna’s data is reliable, accessible, and secure. Working as an individual contributor, you will drive platform maturity and innovation, and collaborate closely with data scientists, engineers, and product managers to shape and implement Moderna’s data vision.
Here’s What You’ll Do
Your key responsibilities will be:
Build scalable, reliable data services using AWS technologies such as Glue, Redshift, Iceberg, Lambda, EMR, Step Functions, and Apache Airflow.
Partner with the Product Manager to gather data requirements, understand business objectives, and convert these into actionable technical plans.
Contribute to architectural decisions that define the future of the data platform’s capabilities.
Drive enablement of secure and governed data sharing through modern data access patterns.
Develop and maintain infrastructure-as-code modules and CI/CD delivery pipelines.
Your responsibilities will also include:
Enable governed self-service data management capabilities for data scientists and domain engineers.
Perform rigorous code reviews to ensure quality and maintainability.
Actively participate in technical knowledge-sharing across the Data Platform team.
Contribute to documentation and internal learning resources to support platform usability.
Align development practices with broader Moderna data platform strategy and standards.

Here’s What You’ll Need (Basic Qualifications)
5–8 years of experience in software or data engineering, preferably in cloud environments.
Proficiency in Python, SQL, and tools like dbt or Apache Spark.
Experience with AWS data stack (e.g., Glue Catalog, IAM, S3).
Solid understanding of CI/CD, DevOps, and IaC tools like Pulumi or Terraform.
Develop and manage ETL/ELT workflows to ingest data from multiple sources (structured, semi-structured, and unstructured).
Here’s What You’ll Bring to the Table (Preferred Qualifications)
Exposure to data lakehouse and data mesh architectures.
Familiarity with data privacy and access control implementations (OAuth, RBAC).
Experience with AI/ML integration or supporting MLOps workflows.
AWS certifications such as AWS Certified Data Analytics – Specialty or AWS Certified Solutions Architect.
