Job Description

The Process Chemistry in the Small Molecule API (SMAPI) division is responsible for the scale-up of active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) for the use in preclinical and early clinical studies.  The Innovative Chemical Technologies group is a part of Process Chemistry and is responsible for developing and enabling new technologies that challenge the status quo in process development.  Within the Innovative Chemical Technologies team is the Machine Learning team focused on applying the tools of computational chemistry and data science to improve the speed and efficiency of process development.  Training in both practical application of data science and organic synthesis is required.

The Senior Scientist I Chemistry position has these key responsibilities: 

  • Develop new tools and models to explain/predict reaction outcomes and enable more rapid reaction discovery and optimization.
  • Keep accurate and current records of research and/or project-related documents according to AbbVie policies.
  • Staying current with advances in the data science and organic synthesis fields.  Act as advocate to integrate this knowledge into the group’s research efforts.  Generate new research or development strategies to effectively address project and divisional goals/needs. 
  • Show flexibility in providing support in Process Chemistry as project demands require.

Qualifications

  • A PhD in organic chemistry or chemical engineering or data science.  MS in organic chemistry and 5-8 years of experience
  • Experience using the tools of machine learning to understand/predict reaction outcomes.    
  • Experience with gathering and analyzing large datasets. 
  • General programming experience in Python
