The Opportunity 

Flock Safety is looking to add a Senior Software Engineer, Android Apps to our Device Software Android Apps team.  As a Senior Software Engineer for Android Apps at Flock Safety, you'll be at the forefront of developing solutions for our network of over 100,000 headless infrastructure-free Android devices. This isn't your typical Android app development role; we're deep in the world of IoT, where your code lives in the real-world solving crime all across the nation day and night.

You'll be part of a passionate team of engineers who are driven to solve complex problems, from optimizing image processing to extending the lifetime of devices to integrating the latest machine learning models for new use cases. Your work will play a vital role in enabling our platform to reliably capture, process, and deliver critical data, ultimately contributing to our mission of reducing crime.

The Skillset 

• Proficient with Android native apps/services in Kotlin

• At least 3+ years of experience with camera2 API and image processing applications

• Experience building and shipping Android apps on custom hardware

• Possess strong debug skills and experience with Android debugging tools

• A proven ability to take a pragmatic data-driven approach to development, testing and deploying new features quickly

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills able to condense information into a succinct synopsis

• Proficient in Git

Nice to Haves:

• Knowledge of Android framework internals especially the Android Camera stack

• Experience creating dashboards with dashboarding tools such as Sigma and Grafana

• Experience working with Android ML framework Tensorflow Lite

90 Days at Flock

The First 30 Days

• Day 1 Impact: You will be busy onboarding but we always like to have each employee have a “first day push of code.” It doesn’t have to be perfect and it doesn’t have to be huge, just important to start and finish something quickly.

• Understand the existing device HW/SW app/service architecture 

• Perform code reviews

• Work with QA to understand the current test process

• Increase test coverage for existing codebase

The First 60 Days 

• Contribute to Device SW documentation

• Deliver bugfixes and performance improvements

• Support efforts to move to common branch across all devices

90 Days & Beyond 

• Work with product operations and customer support teams to identify and resolve field issues

• Integrate and deliver new ML libraries and features

• Integrate and deliver new image quality features

• Identify and deliver features to improve device performance and reliability

The Interview Process 

We want our interview process to be a true reflection of our culture: transparent and collaborative. Throughout the interview process, your recruiter will guide you through the next steps and ensure you feel prepared every step of the way. 

1. Our First Chat: During this first conversation, you’ll meet with a recruiter to chat through your background, what you could bring to Flock, what you are looking for in your next role, and who we are. 

2. The Hiring Manager Interview: You will meet with your potential future boss to really dive into the role, the team, expectations, and what success means at Flock. This is your chance to really nerd out with someone in your field. 

3. The Technical Assessment: Our technical assessments seek to test the hard skills required to do the job. Engineers may find themselves in coding interviews or architecture discussions, sales roles may present mock discovery calls, and leadership roles may craft 90 day plans. Your recruiter will inform you of which assessment you will be assigned and ensure you are fully prepared for your big day. 

4. The Panel: Learn more about the team, responsibilities, and workflows. You should be prepared to speak about past projects, how you collaborate and communicate with others, and how you live our values. Depending on the team and role you are interviewing for, you may meet with several teammates as well as cross-functional partners. 

5. The Executive Review: A chance to meet an executive and view Flock from a different lens. Be prepared to ask well-thought-out questions about the company, culture, and more. 

Salary & Equity

In this role, you’ll receive a starting salary between $170,000-190,000 as well as Flock Safety Stock Options. Base salary is determined by job-related experience, education/training, as well as market indicators. Your recruiter will discuss this in-depth with you during our first chat.
