This is an exciting opportunity for an Optical Engineer, working in the GE Vernova Monitoring & Diagnostics (M&D) business, focused on development of new technologies for gas sensing.

The M&D product line is a class leading vendor of sensing devices and systems to Electrical Utilities and Industrial customers.

The product line spans sensing of multiple asset types and has a broad portfolio of advanced technology, which aid customers to understand and optimise the operating condition of key assets such as HV/MV power transformers and circuit breakers.

In this role, you will work as part of the Engineering R&D team based in Lisburn, Northern Ireland, focused principally on development of optical sensing methods and technology for power transformer monitoring.

The work will involve developing understanding on the design and operation of current GE monitors and the application of appropriate scientific / engineering knowledge to develop new techniques and technologies in this space. The role will also involve the identification and testing of new optical sensor technologies, for future applications in transformer and grid monitoring.

Job Description

Role Summary:

  • The role will involve working in both in an office and a lab environment.
  • As part of this work, you will present outcomes and recommendations back to relevant stakeholders in the business, and work in multi-disciplinary teams to develop new sensor-based products.

Responsibilities: 

  • Work as part of the R&D team to develop optical based technologies for transformer monitoring 
  • Investigate and implement developments in sensing technology for DGA and related monitoring products. 
  • Design and develop test plans and strategy for short R&D projects on optical sensor technology in a lab environment. 
  • Design and conduct hands-on lab tests with data acquisition and analysis using appropriate hardware and software. 
  • Design and develop relevant algorithms and calibration models.  
  • Document and present results to management / key stakeholders. 
  • Work within a cross-functional team to help define and develop product requirements, mechanical and electrical design needs, and project test and verification plans. 
  • Work within the wider R&D team contributing analytical and physics-based analysis where required. 
  • Carry out additional duties as requested by the line manager. 

 

 

 Essential Criteria:

  • Degree in physics/engineering or related degree to Masters level or equivalent knowledge/experience. 
  • Demonstrated research experience in relevant setting, working on optical / laser technology 
  • Proficiency in data analysis and presentations using relevant software packages. 
  • Proficiency in data acquisition and experimental automation and modelling using relevant software tools (such as Matlab, Python, LabView, Simulink). 
  • Proficiency in laser technology, lab techniques and relevant safety considerations. 
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills. 
  • Ability to work independently and be self-motivated. 
  • Demonstrate previous successes working in a team-based environment to meet objectives. 

 

 

Desirable Criteria:

  • PhD in optical based gas sensing or laser technology. 
  • Experience working with gas detection technology in industrial product development. 
  • Expertise in molecular spectroscopy and trace gas detection . 
  • Experience working with photo-acoustic spectroscopy. 
  • Experience with lab based dissolved gas analysis methods. 
  • Broad awareness of DGA industry application area, and relevant sensing technologies. 
  • Experience / interest in data analytics methods such as advanced statistical analysis and/or machine learning. 
  • Experience and understanding of automated self diagnostics within scientific engineering devices.
