The team you'll be part of
Nokia Bell Labs is the world-renowned research arm of Nokia, having invented many of the foundational technologies that underpin information and communications networks and all digital devices and systems. This research has produced nine Nobel Prizes, five Turing Awards and numerous other awards.
The Data-Driven Software Systems Research team builds reliable, trustworthy and intuitive software systems. Research areas in the team include distributed computing, decentralized computing, AI/ML software systems, and privacy-preserving & trust insertion technologies. We envision a future where software systems blend the reliability of classic systems with the creativity of AI, ensuring both adaptability and robustness in real-time applications. We research new techniques to improve GenAI models in a more principled and predictable way, and develop design patterns for building reliable, GenAI-native software systems.
Our international team is based in Antwerp (Belgium) and Stuttgart (Germany).

Are you passionate about improving how software and software systems get built? Do you have a strong research background in machine learning and generative AI, with a proven publication track record? Do you love to write code, build systems, and validate your ideas through tangible prototypes? Then join us in building the next generation of trustworthy software systems at Nokia Bell Labs, the birthplace of software pearls like UNIX and C.

As a research scientist on generative AI in our team you will:

  • Develop and validate techniques that enhance the accuracy, consistency, and correctness of AI-generated software
  • Research methods to make GenAI models more reliable when handling unexpected or novel user requests.
  • Integrate developed methods and techniques to design and develop robust GenAI-native systems.
  • Contribute to the technical definition of research objectives and programs
  • Push the boundaries of the state-of-the-art in your area of expertise and publish the research at leading academic and/or industrial forums
  • Build proof-of-concept demonstrators, create re-usable software implementations and evangelize your work to the research community
  • Create new intellectual property through code, patents, prototypes, papers, etc.
  • Work with Bell Labs researchers across the globe, and external academic and industrial partners, on challenging technical research projects. Keep an active and visible role in the research community through conference committees and reviewing panels
  • Work with Nokia business units and incubators to incubate research into early-stage products or spinouts, transfer knowledge and to act as expert counsel in your field of expertise

We are looking for a motivated research scientist with academic or applied research experience in one or more of the following areas of AI research:

  • Generative AI or the broader field of deep learning, both architecture and training methods
  • Explainable AI (xAI), especially mechanistic interpretability (MI)
  • Factuality of GenAI models: Knowledge Editing, Knowledge Conflicts, Machine Unlearning

In addition:

  • You have a PhD degree in Computer Science / Machine Learning / Electrical Engineering / Statistics. Post-doc experience or industry experience is a plus
  • You are familiar with modern AI engineering & software design principles, frameworks & programming paradigms: prompt engineering (RAG, in-context learning), LLM agents and multi-agent systems, evaluation of LLM applications (e.g., LLM-as-judge), …
  • Publications in top conferences (e.g., NeurIPS, ICLR, ICML, EMNLP, ACL) are a definite plus
  • You are a great communicator, able to explain your research to a broad audience. You have delivered talks at relevant international workshops, conferences, or other events
  • You have demonstrable programming skills, and you like to build working prototypes. Pointers to research prototypes you have built or open-source libraries you have contributed to, are much appreciated
  • You are a quick learner, able to identify & research new technologies
  • You have personal drive, are committed to team objectives and have a positive, “can-do” attitude. You can work autonomously and goal-oriented with little day-to-day guidance
  • You feel comfortable working in an international environment where English is the main language

Location: The position is based in Antwerp (Belgium)
