What we are looking for:

As the Principal Engineer of AI Engineering, you will be responsible for leading our strategy to incorporate cutting-edge AI technologies across our product ecosystem while significantly enhancing developer productivity and effectiveness. You will drive the vision for how AI can revolutionize our internal development processes and strengthen our product offerings in the clean energy market.

You will work with developers across the Technology organization, focusing on identifying, evaluating, and implementing AI tools and methodologies that accelerate development cycles, improve code quality, and create seamless integration pathways between our various products and AI capabilities. This is a high-visibility role that will shape how Stem leverages AI to maintain its competitive edge in the rapidly evolving clean energy technology landscape.

Responsibilities:

  • AI Integration Strategy - Develop and execute a comprehensive strategy for integrating AI capabilities across Stem's product portfolio, with particular focus on Athena® and PowerTrack® platforms.
  • Developer Productivity Enhancement - Lead initiatives to implement AI-powered tools and workflows that measurably improve developer productivity, code quality, and deployment efficiency.
  • Innovation Leadership - Stay at the forefront of emerging AI technologies and methodologies, evaluating their potential impact on Stem's products and development processes.
  • Strategic Partnerships - Identify and establish key partnerships with AI technology providers to accelerate adoption of cutting-edge capabilities.
  • Technical Execution - Oversee the technical implementation of AI-enhanced features and developer tools, ensuring they meet quality standards and business objectives.
  • Metrics & Measurement - Establish clear metrics for measuring improvements in developer productivity and product integration efficiency.
  • Cross-functional Collaboration - Work closely with product management, and engineering teams to align AI integration efforts with product roadmaps and business goals.
  • Technical Advocacy - Serve as an internal and external advocate for Stem's AI capabilities and integration strategy.
  • Operational Excellence - Drive functional and operational excellence while balancing innovation with practical implementation.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Education - B.S. in computer science, artificial intelligence, software engineering, or related technical field required. M.S. or PhD preferred.
  • Leadership Experience - 4+ years of experience leading engineering teams working on AI-powered applications or developer productivity tools.
  • Technical Expertise - 12+ years of software engineering experience with at least 2 years focused on AI/ML technologies and their integration into software products.
  • AI Fluency - Deep understanding of the current AI landscape, including generative AI, LLMs, ML Ops, and AI-assisted development tools.
  • Developer Productivity - Demonstrated experience implementing systems and processes that measurably improve developer productivity and code quality.
  • Cloud & Infrastructure - Strong experience with modern cloud infrastructure and how to optimize it for AI workloads.
  • Technical Leadership - Ability to provide technical direction across multiple teams and influence company-wide technology decisions.
  • Product Understanding - Experience working with product teams to translate business requirements into technical implementation plans.
  • Communication Skills - Exceptional communication skills with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Strategic Thinking - Proven ability to develop and execute long-term technology strategies while delivering short-term business value.
  • Culture & Mentorship - Experience fostering a culture of innovation and continuous learning, with a track record of mentoring engineers to grow their AI and integration capabilities.
  • Agile Methodology - Experience with Agile/Scrum methodologies and balancing process with results-oriented execution.

Salary Range

$167,200.00 - $250,800.00
