Amazon is a leader in creating innovative technologies that are changing the way people find, discover and buy products and services. What unites all of us working at Amazon is that we are striving to delight our customers and make their lives easier, by building one innovative product, service, and idea at a time.
We are looking for a forward thinking, tech savvy, and pragmatic lawyer to help define Amazon’s approach to emerging rules on artificial intelligence systems in the EU and the UK. You will work with legal, business and tech teams in the EU, UK and the US to define our approach to responsible use of AI and our Store-wide compliance approach, which will include mechanisms to detect and prevent development of prohibited systems, and practice guides for Amazon product counsel advising on a broad range of AI systems used to deliver products and services to all Amazon customers, from shoppers to brands, sellers, advertisers, developers, and more. You will work with lawyers specializing in privacy, security, and consumer protection to design and iterate toward robust and durable risk assessment and reporting capabilities to reflect AI-specific considerations. You will work directly with data scientists and engineers to empower builders across Amazon businesses to invent responsible AI systems and uses, at speed. You will also engage with external policymakers and policy influencers to educate about Amazon’s approach to AI systems and advocate for flexibility, predictability, and scalability to be considered in elaborating and enforcing rules and technical standards around AI.
The successful candidate must be inquisitive, enthusiastic about technology, enjoy being continually challenged, and demonstrate sound judgment in perennially ambiguous and evolving situations. The successful candidate works well within a large legal team, thriving when learning from others as well as influencing how others solve real customer problems. Experience in technology product counselling is not required but is strongly preferred.
- Outstanding academic qualifications. Licensed to practice law in an EU member state.
- Minimum 10+ years of post-admission legal experience, including experience in private practice.
- Ability to draft and negotiate commercial contracts and handling pre-litigation disputes and inquiries.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, with prior experience of writing papers/recommendations to senior management as well as briefs to regulators.
- Ability to manage multiple projects at once, follow through and meet deadlines.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to act as a business partner to senior management.
- Sound and practical judgment, even in ambiguous situations, and comfortable making high-quality decisions quickly and with limited information, have an obsession for satisfying customers and a passion for Amazon.
- The ability to function as part of a European and global legal team and autonomously when required.
- A second (European) language is preferred, but not a must.
