We are looking for a Manager to lead the development, manufacturing, and optimization of surface ion traps that enable scalable, high-fidelity quantum operations. In this role, you will manage a diverse team focused on surface ion trap design, fabrication, and characterization for quantum computers in both development and production. In addition, you will work closely with other program and component team leads to define subsystem interfaces, device requirements, and project timelines. Your role also includes maturing the engineering approach to facilitate our mission to build the world’s best quantum computers to solve the world’s most complex problems.
Responsibilities:
- Own the roadmap, goals, and execution for the development and production of the ion traps at the heart of IonQ quantum computers
- Work closely with product, architecture and photonics teams to enable seamless design and system integration of ion traps
- Manage external custom device development with US and international foundries
- Write statements of work for engagement with new and existing vendors, supporting procurement and contract negotiations for critical suppliers
- Work closely with the team responsible for low volume production in a cleanroom environment to ensure trap designs are successfully integrated into novel opto-electronic packages
- Assist in root cause failure analysis of microfabricated devices internally and at external partners; review, track, and resolve risks
- Monitor project performance to understand impacts to cost, schedule, and technical capability; understand status and actively address issues during development; determine critical path amongst cross-functional deliverables and drive the critical decisions to reduce project time
- Assist with the transition from research and development to production, including development of technology demonstrations and implementing faster learning cycles
- Coach and develop team members on skill proficiency and performance with regular feedback
You’d be a good fit with:
- Masters or higher in Engineering or relevant field/discipline
- 3+ years managing R&D, new product introduction (NPI), and/or low-volume manufacturing team or semiconductor devices based on foundry processes
- 5+ years working in a fast-paced R&D or new product introduction team to deliver novel devices, using custom CMOS or MEMS semiconductor devices
- Experience in foundry process development, its characterization, and transfer to production
- Expertise in novel microfabrication, its development and its qualification
- Strong leadership and project management skills, with the ability to drive cross-functional collaboration and manage a diverse team of engineers and scientists
- Excellent communication skills and ability to present to a broad audience at all levels of the company
You’d be a great fit with:
- Expertise in ion trap design, fabrication, and qualification
- Familiarity with integration of ion traps with other quantum systems, including vacuum, cryogenic, and control electronics
- Experience performing low-noise RF and other electrical measurements
- Programming experience in MATLAB, Python, or other engineering relevant language
- Experience with data aggregation and statistical analysis/reporting, and Jira for project management
Location: This role can work from our office in Bothell, WA, or College Park, MD with the option to work remotely a few days a week.

The approximate base salary range for this position is $169,437 - $221,837. The total compensation package includes base, bonus, and equity.
Compensation will vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Posted base salary figures are subject to change as new market data becomes available. Beyond base salary, total compensation includes a variable bonus and equity component and a range of benefit options found on our career site at ionq.co/jobs. IonQ's HQ is located in College Park, Maryland, a quick 15-minute metro from Washington DC. We are actively building out our recently opened manufacturing and production facility in Bothell, WA (near Seattle). Depending on the position, you may be required to be near one of our offices in College Park, Seattle, or Toronto.
