The Position

This position is located in Lead Discovery, a department within Small Molecule Research (SMR) which is part of the Therapeutic Modalities function, where the discovery of chemical starting points for further optimization in medicinal chemistry is our primary focus. 

Join our dynamic High-Throughput Screening and Profiling team within Lead Discovery at Roche and play a key role in optimizing our advanced laboratory automation infrastructure. As an intern focused on Data Workflows and Laboratory Orchestration, you will contribute directly to enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of our scientific delivery as we leverage our newly implemented, high throughput automation platforms.

The Opportunity

  • Use problem-solving skills to work with automation scheduling software APIs, automating key tasks and creating streamlined data and workflow solutions.

  • Help build a connected lab ecosystem enabling seamless interaction between automation platforms, optimizing resources to accelerating discovery of new chemical starting points.

  • Develop tools and dashboards to track run statistics and visualize assay performance in real time, supporting continuous improvement and adoption of best practices.

  • Explore the potential of Large Language Models (LLMs) to improve internal knowledge sharing and automate experimental protocol creation.

  • Gain hands-on experience in early drug discovery research, while developing skills in lab automation, data science, and software development in a collaborative environment.

Who You Are

You are a highly motivated and enthusiastic student currently pursuing a masters degree with a strong focus in computer science, data science, bioinformatics, engineering, or a related quantitative field. You have a keen interest in applying your coding skills to solve challenges in a scientific laboratory setting, particularly within laboratory automation. You are eager to learn about and contribute to the optimization of automated processes in a pharmaceutical research environment.

Your Essential Skills Include:

  • Strong programming skills in Python and JavaScript.

  • Familiarity with database technologies and querying languages.

  • A keen interest in and a basic understanding of laboratory workflows and the role of automation in scientific research.

  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.

  • Strong verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team.

  • A proactive and self-driven approach to learning and task completion.

  • Proficiency in English

Nice to Have:

  • Previous exposure to automation scheduling software.

  • Experience with data visualization tools and techniques.

  • Familiarity with C# programming.

Due to regulations non-EU/EFTA citizens must provide a certificate from the university stating that an internship is mandatory as part of the application documents.
