The Ontario Securities Commission is an independent Crown agency that regulates Ontario’s capital markets by making rules that have the force of law and by adopting policies that influence the behaviour of capital markets participants.The Ontario Securities Commission (OSC) is the statutory body responsible for regulating Ontario’s capital markets in accordance with the mandate established in the provincial Securities Act and the Commodity Futures Act. The mandate of the OSC is to provide protection to investors from unfair, improper or fraudulent practices, to foster fair, efficient and competitive capital markets and confidence in the capital markets, to foster capital formation, and to contribute to the stability of the financial system and the reduction of systemic risk. This mandate is performed through policy, operational, and enforcement activities. The OSC also contributes to national and global securities regulation development.

The OSC’s Derivatives department within the division of Trading and Markets assists the OSC in the delivery of its strategic goals and priorities through policy development, regulatory advice and research and by support for the OSC’s business planning, policy prioritization and risk management processes. Key responsibilities of this department include the following:
1. Regulatory Oversight: Ensuring that participants in the derivatives market comply with Ontario’s securities laws and regulations.
2. Policy Development: Developing and updating rules and policies to enhance the regulatory framework for over-the-counter (OTC) derivatives trading.
3. Risk Management: Assessing and monitoring systemic risks associated with derivatives trading to maintain market stability.
These functions are crucial for maintaining the integrity and efficiency of Ontario’s derivatives market.
As a part of this focus, we are seeking a Research & Data Analyst. This is an excellent opportunity to assist with the regulation of derivative markets in Ontario.
Reporting to the Manager, Derivatives, the Research & Data Analyst is responsible for conducting research and providing support to other team members on certain branch initiatives including policy development, rule compliance reviews, trade repository oversight, database development, and to provide statistics, visualizations, analysis and commentary on derivatives data.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Compliance Reviews
Works with more senior members of the team to conduct derivatives rule compliance reviews of market participants focusing on data analytics to assess compliance.
Collaborates with other OSC staff to prepare written summaries of compliance review findings.
Research & Analysis
OTC Derivatives
Conducts analysis of OTC derivatives data across all asset classes, instruments and types including understanding all major derivative types in terms of their different economic characteristics, methods to value and price.
Designs custom reports and summarizes large sets of data from raw data based on user requirements.
Creates visualizations that address various topics, such as data quality statistics and market trends.
Supports more senior team members drafting written recommendations and summaries from quantitative analysis.
Advisory
Trade Repositories
Supports more senior team members working and communicating with national and international trade repositories to meet the OSC’s OTC derivative data reporting and analysis needs.
Information Technology
Data and Technology Management
Supports data management activities for big data sets and associated technology helping to ensure the quality of OTC derivatives data meets the OSC’s OTC derivative data reporting and analysis needs.
Coding
Coordinates the manipulation and transformation of data used for analysis to solve unique complex problems using computer programming by creating algorithms to help with the analysis of OTC derivatives and reference data.
Qualifications
An undergraduate degree in business/commerce/finance/accounting/computer science or information management
A strong technical knowledge of financial data management with a background in performing technical data activities including general scripting, coding and report development
1-2 years' experience in financial services or data management
Knowledge and experience in database tools including SQL, Python and R
Experience working with reporting software such as Tableau, MS Power BI, and advanced MS Excel
Experience with market data vendors such as Bloomberg and Refinitiv
A proven ability to deliver high quality analysis
The ability to clearly communicate results in written or verbal form
The ability to work independently and as part of a team
Knowledge of OTC derivatives and other financial products an asset
