Flexcity, a leading European energy tech company within the Veolia Group is looking for a resourceful Data Scientist to join our Data team. 

 

 

 

 

Job Description

As a Data Scientist, you will be the owner of data assets related to short-term electricity markets, for which Flexcity aims to deliver a best-in-class service. You will carry out quantitative analyses and design optimization solutions using Machine Learning or Linear Programming for our “Smart Grid” services. You will also collaborate with fellow Data Engineers and Developers to deploy these solutions into production.

By interacting with other Flexcity teams, you will gain hands-on experience in developing intelligent systems for both electricity markets (day-ahead, intraday, aFRR, …) and flexible assets (BESS, CHPs, solar parks, …). You will work with cutting-edge and innovative technologies used by Flexcity (Internet of Things, cloud-native development, …) in a fast-moving industry that actively contributes to the energy transition.

As Data Scientist, your time will be divided into:

 

  • Research and Development of ML and Optimization Algorithms - 60% 

    • Contribute to all stages of the R&D lifecycle, including design, development, testing, deployment and monitoring of optimization algorithms

  • Delivering Quantitative Insights to Portfolio Teams - 30% 

    • Use data-driven tools and skills to support colleague portfolio managers in their day-to-day work (market bidding, account management, …)

  • Data Architecture Improvement - 10% 

    • Actively participate in initiatives to enhance the data stack, DevOps/MLOps practices and coding standards to foster a culture of continuous improvement

Qualifications

 

Experience

  • Master’s degree or PhD in Computer Science, Mathematical, Electricity or Energy Engineering, Mathematics or Physics with an excellent academic record

  • At least 4 years of professional experience working in a quantitative-savvy environment solving complex optimization problems using data

Hard Skills

  • Fluent in English

  • Mathematical modeling: Proficient in translating complex real-world systems into rigorous mathematical models

  • Python development: Proficient in writing Python scripts and building small Python prototypes (with libraries such as pandas, polars, requests, plotly, …)

  • SQL: Experience in understanding and writing complex SQL queries

  • Optimization: Experience with either Linear Optimization or Machine Learning methods

  • Nice to Have - experience with Linux and Git as DevOps tools

  • Nice to Have - experience with cloud platforms (Google Cloud, AWS, Azure, ...)

 

Soft Skills

  • Strong analytical thinking: Independently deconstruct complex quantitative problems and apply a systematic, methodical approach to implement effective solutions

  • Effective communication skills: Effectively convey complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, fostering collaboration and understanding across teams

  • Project management expertise: Organise and prioritise tasks, coordinate cross-functional efforts, and ensure timely delivery of solutions that align with project goals

  • A positive, pragmatic and professional attitude

  • Comfortable in a fast changing work environment, you can easily adapt

  • Nice to Have: an interest for the energy sector
