At the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Solid State Physics IAF, we know our technologies like the back of our hand. As one of the few scientific institutions worldwide, we conduct research along the entire semiconductor value chain and on customized synthetic diamonds. Whether it's high-frequency circuits for communication technology, voltage converter modules for electromobility, laser systems for measurement processes, or innovative hardware and software for quantum computers and quantum sensors, we develop tomorrow's technology from a single source for a sustainable and safe society. Will you join us soon?

At the new location in Heilbronn, we are researching and developing electronic CMOS digital circuits with the aim of artificial intelligence for use in artificial intelligence platforms, together with our partners from industry and academia. The focus is on research and development for applications in the automotive, robotics, and security sectors.

Major activities are underway worldwide to enable, improve, and make mobile the possibilities for the use of artificial intelligence through hardware design. To this end, both the hardware fundamentals and the methods for their creation are continuously being developed. The design flow of these circuits and their (sub)systems is of particular importance.

What you will do

  • You will hold scientific responsibility for the development of CMOS circuit design methodologies tailored to meet the forthcoming project needs and commitments at the Heilbronn branch.
  • In this role, you will design, plan, and manage the group's workflows, acting as the main point of contact for group members throughout project acquisition and processing.
  • You will keep the group updated on key departmental and group matters, maintain regular information exchange with the department head, and participate in group management meetings.
  • Additionally, you will promote the professional development of employees and engage in the selection and training of personnel.
  • You will also take the initiative to acquire and manage research projects or sub-projects in close collaboration with other groups and departments at the institute.

What you bring to the table

  • You have successfully completed a university degree (diploma/master's) in electrical engineering, computer science, microsystems engineering, communications engineering, or a comparable field.
  • You have experience in project acquisition and management and can demonstrate good knowledge of CMOS digital technology. A doctorate and/or experience with AI methods are desirable.
  • You are very familiar with circuit simulation and simulation programs such as Cadence Virtuoso, Keysight Advanced Design System (ADS), or similar.
  • You enjoy working in a team and have strong communication skills.
  • You also demonstrate organizational skills and an independent, goal-oriented approach to work.
  • Fluent English skills round out your profile.

What you can expect

  • A responsible position where you can showcase both your scientific and organizational skills.
  • State-of-the-art research infrastructure with unique facilities along the entire value chain.
  • Diverse research areas that allow for both specialization and interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Application-oriented projects and close contacts with industry and public clients.
  • Continuous participation in current research discussions as well as freedom in your own research.
  • Exchange with colleagues within the Fraunhofer Society as well as other research institutions and industry.
  • Professional and personal development opportunities through a variety of training programs and participation in international conferences.

The weekly working time is 39 hours. This position is also available on a part-time basis. We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of equal suitability. Appointment, remuneration and social security benefits based on the public-sector collective wage agreement (TVöD).
