As a Principal Robotics Engineer, you will play a critical role in shaping the future of robotic construction equipment at Genie. You will lead R&D initiatives, design autonomous and semi-autonomous systems, and work on sensor fusion, perception, motion planning, and control algorithms to integrate robotics into new and existing products.
You will collaborate with cross-functional teams across mechanical, electrical, and software engineering to develop innovative automation solutions that enhance equipment performance, operator safety, and job site productivity.
What you’ll do
- Lead the research, design, and development of robotic solutions for new Genie lift products and retrofit existing equipment with automation and intelligence.
- Develop advanced motion control, perception, and decision-making algorithms for autonomous navigation, path planning, and task execution.
- Integrate sensors (LiDAR, cameras, IMUs, GPS, RADAR) and AI-based perception for real-time environmental awareness.
- Design, prototype, and test robotic control architectures, including real-time systems and edge computing.
- Collaborate with hardware and software teams to ensure seamless integration of robotic systems with mechanical and electrical components.
- Develop and implement AI/ML models for predictive maintenance, object recognition, and autonomous behavior.
- Lead validation and field testing of robotic-enabled equipment in real-world construction environments.
- Ensure compliance with safety and industry standards (ISO, ANSI, OSHA) for autonomous construction machinery.
- Stay ahead of emerging technologies in robotics, AI, and automation to drive innovation within Genie.
What you’ll bring
- Master's or Ph.D. in Robotics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, or a closely related field. Equivalent professional experience may be considered in place of a formal degree.
- 10+ years of experience in robotics development, industrial automation, or autonomous systems.
- Proficiency in robot programming and simulation (ROS, Gazebo, RoboDK, V-REP, or equivalent).
- Strong proficiency in C++ or Python for robotics.
- Proven ability to lead complex engineering projects and mentor junior engineers.
- Understanding version control (Git), unit testing, debugging, and performance optimization.
- Excellent problem-solving, communication, and leadership skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with off-road, construction, or industrial vehicle automation.
- Familiarity with human-machine interaction (HMI), teleoperation, and remote-control technologies.
- Knowledge of robotic welding, material handling, or automated assembly systems.
- Experience with cloud-based automation and IoT integration.
- Strong knowledge of robotic safety standards (ISO 10218, ANSI/RIA R15.06, OSHA regulations).
- 15+ years of experience in robotics development, industrial automation, or autonomous systems.
- Strong background in control systems, motion planning, and multi-sensor fusion.
- 8+ years of experience developing action control loops using computer vision and AI-based perception (OpenCV, TensorFlow, etc.).
- Experience with robotic perception, deep learning, and AI for real-time decision-making.
- Experience integrating industrial PLCs, actuators, and automation control systems.
- 8+ years developing training models for physics based simulation in tools such as Isaac Sim
- Deep understanding of design tradeoffs and uses between manipulator designs
- Deep understanding of the design and function of a 7 DOF robotic arm
- 8+ years working with and developing fleet management software
- 5+ years of experience on sensor selection and implementation across various robotic chassis form factors
- Expertise in autonomous vehicle systems, AMRs, AGVs, or aerial work platform

The salary range for this position is $209,000-$265,000 annually. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc.
