The Hussman Institute has an exciting opportunity for a Biostatistician 2- Applied AI/ML Associate 2 position. The incumbent provides advanced expertise in artificial intelligence and machine learning, developing innovative analytical approaches in collaboration with project principal investigators. This role entails creating detailed reports to document analytic processes and results, as well as contributing to the design and validation of robust protocols for collecting, verifying, managing, and analyzing large-scale genotypic and phenotypic datasets. Furthermore, the AI/ML Scientist 2 acts as the primary liaison between junior AI/ML specialists in the department and broader research teams, ensuring that cutting-edge methods are consistently integrated into complex research initiatives.

                            

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS                                                                                           

  • Leads the creation of sophisticated AI/ML-based analysis strategies, defining detailed specifications for data handling, consistency checks, model outputs, and visualizations.

  • Serves as the primary point of contact for research teams, addressing complex machine learning questions, advanced genetic analysis, and ensuring alignment with scientific and clinical objectives.

  • Oversees data processing, executes advanced AI/ML methods, and synthesizes findings for large research projects, emphasizing innovative solutions and practical applications.

  • Translates complex model results into clear, actionable insights and authors comprehensive methodological sections for study documentation and publications.

  • Prepares detailed summaries for grant progress reports, presentations, and peer-reviewed articles, tailoring the depth of ML content to varied audiences.

  • Maintains and documents extensive project databases and AI/ML models, upholding rigorous standards for version control, data security, and compliance.

  • Advises study investigators on selecting and refining appropriate AI/ML techniques, proactively identifying opportunities for methodological improvements.

  • Provides advanced support to overcome modeling barriers, coordinating with other data scientists, methodologists, and statisticians to ensure best-in-class solutions.

  • Strictly follows University policies and procedures, safeguarding research integrity and institutional resources.

  • Master’s degree in relevant field

  • Minimum 5 years of relevant experience

DEPARTMENT ADDENDUM

Department Specific Functions

Lead the design and implementation of comprehensive quality control frameworks and standardization protocols to ensure the accuracy, reliability, and reproducibility of genetic data for both research and clinical applications. Develop and refine advanced ML strategies that integrate genomic data with other omics layers (e.g., proteomics, metabolomics) and clinical information, enhancing our capacity to model disease processes and predict individual risk more precisely. Oversee the end-to-end development of cutting-edge ML models to predict genetic disease risk from large-scale genomic datasets, ensuring robust performance and the incorporation of diverse biological datasets for more accurate insights. Apply expert-level skills in phasing, haplotyping, and local/global ancestry determination, driving complex analyses of genetic diversity across populations and informing innovative approaches in population genetics and statistical genetics.  Provide leadership in the conception and execution of interdisciplinary research projects, leveraging ML insights from genetic data to inform personalized medicine strategies and drive forward-thinking treatment paradigms. Contribute substantially to grant proposal development and funding applications by offering advanced expertise in genetics, ML, and data management, thereby increasing the potential for securing departmental research resources.
